What is phonetics?
Phonetics

provide learners of English

with the necessary gestures to produce
certain sounds and discover which
muscle movements in which
combination and sequence are required
for the production of these sounds.

What is a sound
inventory?
The

sound inventory of the English

language is the pool of sounds which
speakers use to construct words.
In English there are -------- sounds
(phonemes).

What 2 main categories are

there?
Vowels

no obstruction
Consonants obstruction to air flow

What do voice, manner, and

place mean?
Are

the vocal cords vibrating when

they are produced? Both /p/ and /b/ are
made by closing the lips briefly to stop the
flow of air and then releasing it. The only
difference between them is that
/b/ is voiced while /p/ is not. But what a
key difference this voicing contrast makes
linguistically! Would you rather receive a
bat on the head or a pat on the head?

Place
Where

in the vocal tract is the air

flow obstructed?

Manner
To

what degree is the air flow

obstructed?

What is the IPA?

This

IPA chart was created in order to

separate pronouncing from spelling, as
some words reveal to be very
complicated in that matter.
The mission of the Association is to set
out "one symbol for every sound, one
sound for every symbol"

Lets practice making

sounds!
