Editing

Editing is the process of piecing

together the visual images (shots,
angles and movements) to gain
correct continuity in the sequence

To understand key editing techniques and
why they are used.

Ellipsis
In this scene, we actually see very little.
Editing creates a narrative (storyline) for
us.

is used to
trick us!

Ellipsis is a common procedure in film narrative, where

movement and action unnecessary to the telling of a
story will often be removed by editing. For example,
there would be no need to show a character standing up
from a chair and walking the length of a room to open a
door. Instead, the character may be shown standing up
from the chair and then in the next cut - normally viewed
from a different angle, or with a cutaway shot in
between, necessary to smooth over the gap - he would
have already crossed the room and be over by the door.

Cut
A basic cut is when the scene moves from
one shot to another immediately.
When I click on this slide it will cut to the
next.

Fade
This transition is when the image fades
away gradually.
You can fade to black: often used to
signal the end of a day. Or fade to white
which is used when a softer effect is
required. At the beginning of a dream
sequence for example.

Dissolve
A dissolve is where one image dissolves
into another.
This is used rarely in modern film making,
but can be seen often in 50s and 60s films.

Wipes
A wipe is when one image is wiped away to
be replaced by another. Wipes can happen
in a variety of directions.
Wipes became popular in the 70s and
80s.
They were used extensively in the original
star wars movie.

Jump cut
A jump cut is a cut in film editing in which two sequential shots of the same
subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly. This type of edit
causes the subject of the shots to appear to "jump" position in a discontinuous
way. For this reason, jump cuts are considered a violation of classical
continuity editing, which aims to give the appearance of continuous time and
space in the story-world by de-emphasizing editing. Jump cuts, in contrast, draw
attention to the constructed nature of the film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1yUwWG5ikE
