Curriculum focus for measurement is calculation and problem solving of the following
formula;
Areas of rectangles:
= Width x length.
= base x height/2
= base x height
Calculate the volume of rectangular prisms
Notes
What do they already know in this area? Do I simply work on the 4 formulas above, or do we need to
look at other areas of measurement?
Possible first lesson
Handprint
Calculate areas of rooms for flooring (different flooring types will require different measurements
such as carpet versus tiles for a room versus floor boards and conversion of these to fit the area)
Calculate walls for painting (how many litres in a paint can, how much area will it cover and how
many coats)
Garden for landscaping
Costing of the options and fitting into a budget
Students remodel, or use existing house model (if remodel I provide the house rules that they must
meet which would enable the different shapes to be covered off. If no remodel I ensure each shape is
included) to apply their understanding of area and measurement, and to cost this renovation within
a defined budget.
Provide them with a house design that incudes triangles and parallelograms etc, and or they have to
draw from scratch a house design and include a certain number of shapes, and or you give them a
house design and they remodel to include certain criteria (like on house rules) but within a budget.
They have to calculate every room measurement
Then pick their flooring and wall design scheme based on a budget
Then cost based on calculations
Could add landscaping?
Could include furniture like wardrobes and kitchen cabinetry etc.
Then try and put it into the 3d design online
End product would be
o
Scaled drawing of their house design drawn to scale showing all calculation and
measurements
o
Costing sheet
o
Photograph of colour scheme (if I can get samples)
o
Printout of their design in 3d
