Vocabulary
x - intercept: the value of x
where the line crosses the x-
axis (where y = 0)
y - intercept: the value of y
where the line crosses the y-
axis (where x = 0)
Slope – intercept form: a
way to write an equation, y
= mx + b, m is the slope
and b is the y - intercept
Finding x – intercepts and y –
intercepts to graph linear
equations
• Find the x and y – intercepts of the line
2x + 3y = 6. Use the intercepts to
graph the equation.
• First find the x – intercept ( remember y = 0)
• 2x + 3y = 6
• Then find the y – intercept (remember x = 0)
• 2x + 3y = 6
• The x intercept is 3, the y intercept is 2
• So, the graph of line 2x + 3y = 6 is the line
that crosses the x-axis at the point (3,0) and
the y-axis at the point (0,2)
Using Slope intercept form to
find slopes and y-intercepts
• Write each equation in slope-intercept
form, and then find the slope and y-
intercept.
• EX. A: y = x
• y = mx + b b=
• y = (1)x + 0 0

m=
1
• The slope of the line y = x is 1, and
the y – intercept is 0.
Using Slope intercept form to
find slopes and y-intercepts
• Write each equation in slope-intercept
form, and then find the slope and y-
intercept.
• EX. B: 7x = 3y
• Reverse expression 3y = 7x
• 3y = 7x

• The slope of the line 3y = 7x is 7/3 and the

y – intercept is 0
Using Slope intercept form to
find slopes and y-intercepts
• Write each equation in slope-intercept
form, and then find the slope and y-
intercept.
• EX. C: 2x + 5y = 8

• The slope of the line 2x + 5y = 8 is -2/5

and the y – intercept is 8/5
Writing Slope-intercept form
• Write the equation of the line that
passes through (-3,1) and (2, -1) in
slope-intercept form.
• First find slope using
• Second, use either point and
substitute it along with the slope into
the slope-intercept form. Solve for b.
Write the equation.
