maintain a safe and healthy workplace for their employees, contractors and visitors. This includes maintaining safe work areas, ensuring plant and machinery are in a safe condition, organising safe systems of work, making sure equipment and substance are handled, stored and transported safely, and to provide employees and contractors with adequate information, safety induction, instruction, training and supervision in order to work safely without risks to health or the environment. Employers have the same responsibilities to contractors (or sub-contractors) and visitors to farm workplaces as they have to their employees. This includes family members, especially children, visitors to the property and members of the public.
Employees
Employees must take reasonable care to
protect their own health and safety and the health and safety of others while at work. This includes following safety instructions and being cooperative and working with the employer to ensure all OH&S requirements within the workplace are met. If unsure, ask for assistance.
Contractors
Contractors and sub-contractors also have
responsibilities, both as an employer and an employee. Contractors must take all responsibility to protect their own health and safety and the health and safety of others within the workplace. This includes following safety instructions, and co-operation with their employer/farmer to ensure all OH&S requirements within the workplace are met. Contractors too, where necessary, are required to have relevant licenses and be competent to operate plant. If unsure, ask for assistance.
