The article I chose was called Program pushes to stop cyberbullying before it
starts written by Steven Petrow. The article was written for USA Today and was
about the prevalence of cyberbullying, now that so many people have access to the
internet and modern technology. The article centered on the Tyler Clementi
Foundation and their efforts to combat cyberbullying. The foundation has begun a
new program called #Day1, which aims to rally people to be Upstanders, as
opposed to bystanders of bullying, by asking them to pledge to speak up if they
know someone is the victim of cyberbullying.
When searching for other articles on cyberbullying, I used only the keyword
cyberbullying. I searched on Yahoo and Bing. I found many of the same articles on
each search engine. Each of them made it easy to find a current news article by
providing ways to narrow the search. Yahoo seemed to make it easier to find a
reputable source. The site had ads clearly separated from other links, while Bing hid
some ads within the other links, which caused a longer search time.
One of the articles I found through Yahoo was an article from PsychCentral
about a study recently published by The University of Michigan on parents views
about defining and punishing cyberbullying. The article was written on September
23, 2015. It has not been updated. The article is relevant to my topic in that it

concerns the ever-growing problem of bullying in a cyber environment. The article
was written by Dr. Rick Nauert, who has multiple Masters Degrees in health-related
fields. The article was also scientifically reviewed by Dr. John Grohol, Psy.D. The
information seems to be trustworthy, as it is based on a study by the University of
Michigan, cites its sources, and was scientifically reviewed by another expert. The
purpose of the article is simply to inform people of the results of the study. There is
no bias, as the author has nothing to gain by publishing the information.
To find scholarly journals through the CCBC library website, I used the
keyword cyberbullying. I used the database ProQuest, only because I have used it
before and knew what to expect from it.
In comparing Proquest and the Yahoo search engine, both mediums are
comparable in terms of ease of access. Both have means of narrowing down the
search, which makes it very easy to find articles specific to the topic and timeframe
that you are looking for. Both had the option to only include recent articles in the
search. The article I found online was from this week, while the library article was
from 3 months ago. As I said, the internet and the library databases are
comparable, except when it comes to authority. I automatically knew I was going to
find a reputable source on Proquest, and I found many of them. These articles are
guaranteed to be scholarly articles reviewed by experts. Searching for the same
such articles on Yahoo, however, was not as reliable. It took much longer to find
articles that were written by a reliable source that was not biased and that was not
an ad. Given the choice, I would prefer to use a library database for sources.
This paper was written in MLA format.
