Crisis and opportunities of Thai nurses in the ASEAN

Abstract
Thailand has announced its entrance into the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)
in 2015. Nursing is one of eight professional occupational fields that can freely move.
A preliminary agreement has resulted in a mutual recognition arrangement in Asian
professions that nurses need to request nursing licenses in member countries, pass the
assessment by the nursing regulatory authorities of the country of origin and under
supervision of government sectors. Change in the future of Thai nurses will reach crisis
as Thai nurses have an increased workload both as regards Thai citizens and the new
workforce from neighboring countries. The shortage of Thai nurses has resulted in an
increase in the number of foreign nurses working in the country. The service for foreigners
in business needs manpower in nursing of high ability, able to communicate in a second
language. Apart from the upcoming crisis, Thai nurses will also have the opportunity to
improve the production of high quality nursing and midwifery. Performance enhancement
is a response to multiculturalism including nursing specialty and advanced nursing.
Furthermore, professional organizations should establish and develop the capability of
Asian nurses, control and maintain standards of nursing practice.
