The article, Smartphones in the Classroom: A Teachers Dream
or Nightmare?, is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using
mobile technology in the classroom as well as give a brief history about
cases that either side of the discussion. The article begins with cases of
schools banning or limiting devices in schools, then point out the outcome
stemming from the action. The outcomes show that it impossible to police
the students possession of such devices in the classroom, then the article
moves onto negative aspects of the use of technology, pointing out that
students in L.A., when given iPads that were programmed to not install
games or play television shows, hacked the devices, showing negative
results. Finally, the article ends with a positive view, such as a bring your
own device policy that shows students will, as a whole do better on
assignments posted online because the public including their peers will
see their work.

a. The article was written on September 2, 2015. It was only updated 6 hours after being posted.
b. It relates to the topic of using mobile technology in the classroom in order to assist learning.
c. The author is implied to be an employee of CBC News, but is unknown.
d. The article is written by a news channel, so the information in the article is gathered from
students and teachers that are interviewed, also since the author is unknown, so whether or not
they are qualified is unknown as well. There are studies referenced in there article so the
evidence is from the school districts that had done those experiments.
e. The article was written to discuss the advantages and disadvantages present when mobile
technology is used in the classroom. It seems the author is trying to inform readers about the
effects that technology has when present in class. The article does seem to indicate some bias,
due to the author focusing more on the negative aspects of technology in the hands of students
when class is in session.

a.

The ease of access when searching for a database article versus a recent article is very
different. Or the database article, it was simple to search the CCBC Library to find a relevant

article. To find a recent article from the internet, it was noticeably more difficult to find one, most
links found were blogs from sources where the credibility was unknown.
b.

For both the articles, they were written fairly recently. The database article was published
on September 1, 2015, while the article from CBC News was published a day later, on
September 2, 2015. Both havent been updated from the time that they were published.

c. When comparing the authority to write an article pertaining to the use of technology in the
classroom, the database article is significantly better. While the article written by CBC News
comes from a few studies done by schools an interviews from teachers and students, the
database article has numerous sources that the information is referenced from. Finally, the
database article is written by someone who works in the education system, while the CBC
News article is written by a reporter, the news reporter is less qualified to write about this issue
when compared to the worker from the education system.
