Experiment 6
Resonance and speed of sound
Abstract
Sound is a longitudinal, mechanical wave created by vibrating object. Sound can travel
through any medium, but it cannot travel through a vacuum. While, resonance is a
phenomenon that occurs when a given system is driven by another vibrating system or
external force to oscillate with greater amplitude at a specific preferential frequency. In this
experiment, the group determined the speed of sound through a liquid medium. The
equipments used are tuning fork, graduated cylinder, and a rubber mallet. The procedures
are as follows. First, the graduated cylinder was filled with water in such away that it will
produce a sound when the tuning fork is held inside the cylinder. Second, the tuning fork
was struck by a rubber mallet to enable it to vibrate. Third, the tuning fork was held in the
cylinder. Note that the water must be in a specific amount, otherwise the tuning fork will not
produce any sound. If the frequency of the tuning fork is high, the wavelength must be low.
Finally, the grouped obtained the speed of sound which is 3460 cm/sec which is compared
to the actual speed of sound which is 34300 cm/sec.

Questions:
1.Through what fraction of a vibration has the prong of a tuning fork moved while the
sound travelled down to the water surface inside the pipe and reflected back up to the fork
again?
The prong of the tuning dork moved while the sound travelled down to the water surface
1/2 of the cycle. It is because the sound wave produced travelled 1/4 of a wave up and 1/4
of wave down.
2.What is the approximate wavelength of the fundamental frequency of a closed tube 35.0
cm long if the tube has a diameter of 4.000 cm?
Formula: =4[L +0.3 D]
=4[35.0 + 0.3(4.000)]
=4[35.0 + 1.200]
=4[36.2]
=144.8 cm
=145 cm

3.A tuning fork of frequency 384 Hz exhibit resonance with closed tube 20.0 cm long and
4.000 cm in diameter. What is the speed of the sound wave?
Use the formula: = 4[L+0.39D], to get
= 4[20.0+0.3(4.000)]
= 4[20.0+1.2000]
= 4[21]
= 84 cm
Formula: V=f for the speed of sound
V=84x384
V=32300
V= 32300 cm/sec
