SLCC Student Learning Outcomes:
SLCC is committed to fostering and assessing the following student learning outcomes in
it programs and courses:
1. Acquiring substantive knowledge in their intended major
2. Communicate effectively.
3. Develop quantitative literacies necessary for their chosen field of study.
4. Think critically and creatively
5. Develop the knowledge and skills to be civically engaged.
6. Develop the knowledge and skills to work with others in a professional and
constructive manner.
7. Develop computer and information literacy.
Course Requirements:
This is an internet course and no late assignments will be accepted for any reason. Inside
this course are fifteen modules. Each module is composed of a Radiology topic and a
Medical Terminology section. To complete each module, the student reads the content
in each module. They will then take one quiz on the radiology topic and one quiz on the
medical terminology section.
Additionally, in each module there is a discussion question regarding the module topic.
Students must post a well-composed comment to the discussion topic for each module,
and they must respond to at least one fellow students comment.
Quiz Grading Criteria: The student is required to take both the radiology and medical
terminology quizzes for each module by the due dates as listed on the course schedule
and on the course calendar. Due dates are Weds by 11:59 pm. All module course work
must be completed by the due date or no points will be awarded, no exceptions.
Quizzes are each worth ten points. There will be no make-up quizzes or extra credit
assignments to make-up missed quizzes.

8/24/2015

Medical Terminology Final: There is a final for only the medical terminology portion of
the modules. It will contain 100 multiple choice questions and is comprehensive. The
medical terminology final can be found in Module 15 and will require a proctor. (See
below)

The Final must be taken at a testing center. To schedule an appointment go to

http://www.slcc.edu/online/students/testing/index.aspx, click on Student Resources (left hand side) and
the scheduling link will be on the right side of the screen. Be sure to read over the information about
the testing centers. If you have any questions please call 801-957-4442 (Redwood) or 801-957-3406
(South).
Keep in mind you must give yourself time to take the test before the centers close, so I recommend
scheduling early and at least 2 hours before the closing time. Their regular hours are M-Th 8:00 am
to 7:00 pm and F 8:00am to 5:00pm.
1)
Make a testing appointment, ideally the day before the test date; and,
2) Always bring your student ID (OneCard) to the Testing Center. Its required for testing. Every
time.
3)
Wrist watches are no longer allowed in the testing centers
If you do not live in the Salt Lake area and want to arrange for a test proctor on your own. Click
on the Explore Remote Proctoring link.
Full-semester courses, students have 6 weeks from the first day of classes to submit a request for
a remote proctor.
If the Jordan campus is more convenient, you can take it there; Monday through Friday, 8:00 4:00
(Students will not be seated after 2:30 to allow them enough time to complete their exam.)
Discussion Grading Criteria. Students must post twice in each module. First, is a
response to the discussion question, second, students must respond to another students
statements.
Following are the criteria that must be met on the discussion postings:
1. The posts should consist of full paragraphs and complete sentences and must be
at least 200 words.
2. Spelling and grammatical errors should be infrequent. (These are not text
messages and should not look or read like one. Capitol letters and proper
punctuation should be used appropriately.)
3. The posts should stay on topic, reference course readings, and contribute to the
discussion in a meaningful way and not read like it was dashed off quickly. Simply
posting I agree or I disagree does not constitute a meaningful contribution.
4. The posts should make substantial points or bring in interesting questions which
stimulate others to respond with serious comments of their own.
5. The reply post to another student should stand alone, meaning that when the
instructor reads the reply, s/he should not have to read the original post to
understand what is being said. These must be at least 100 words.
It is recommended that students compose their posts in a word
processing program such as Word; where grammar and spell checks can
be performed, and the word count is automatically calculated.

8/24/2015

Using the criteria above, points will be assigned to each of the two posts as follows:
5 points equals excellent
All 5 criteria were covered thoroughly.
4 points equals above average
1 criterion was not covered
3 points equals average
2 criterion were not covered
2 points equals below average
3 criterion were not covered
1 points equals poor
4 criterion were not covered
0 points means the student did not contribute in the specified time.
Clinical Observation Assignment: Students will also have the option of observing in a
radiology department for a minimum of 4 hours. There are instructions and a form
located in module 4 that must be submitted by Dec 9th if the student wishes to do this.
Be aware that some hospitals require paperwork and/or immunizations and some
advance notice to set this up. It is suggested that the student start setting this up early
and not wait until the end of the semester because there is limited space and hospitals
fill up.
Course Grading:
Radiology quizzes:

10 points possible X 15 modules = 150 points

Medical terminology quizzes:

10 points possible X 15 modules = 150 points

Module discussion posting:

5 points possible X 15 modules = 75 points

How to succeed in this course:

Print this syllabus and look it over carefully more than once. Ask the instructor if you
have any questions about the course set-up or information in the syllabus.
*Check the calendar and/or syllabus for due dates. Missed quizzes and
discussions will not accepted*.

8/24/2015

The successful students are those that access the course several times a week.
Interaction in discussions seems to facilitate involvement in the course and a better
understanding of the field of radiology. Expect to spend a minimum of 4 hours per week
reading, studying, completing the assessments and composing and posting the
discussion topics.
Remember that 2 postings are required per module; one is the students own thoughts
regarding the discussion question for that module, the other is a response to another
students thoughts. The most common thing that students forget is to post a response to
another student. Other common mistakes are not meeting the number of words required
per post and not capitalizing letters.
Be proactive and take charge of your own education. How much you get out of this
course, and how much you learn about the radiology field is in large part determined by
how involved you are with the course materials and discussions. Students can work
ahead but make sure you complete all discussion posts. Re-read the section about titled
Discussion Grading Criteria and be thoughtful in your discussion postings.
Have fun. Be sure to thoroughly investigate whether you want radiography as a career
or not.
