Lesson Title: Subtracting By Using a Number Line

Intended Subject Area(s): math
Intend Grade Level: second
Suggested Group Size: Class, Individual, group work (within their tables)
Introduction: The students will learn how to subtract by using a number line with 90%
accuracy.
Standard: 6.0 Students will develop their ability to solve problems by engaging in
developmentally appropriate problem solving opportunities in which there is a need to use
various approaches to investigate and understand mathematical concepts in order to: formulate
their own problems; nd solutions to problems from everyday situations; develop and apply
strategies to solve a wide variety of problems; and integrate mathematical reasoning,
communication, and connections.
Objective(s): For students to be able to understand what a number line is, and all the possible
numbers that can be one it. Also students should be able to successfully be able to subtract using
a number line.
Procedures:
Step 1: The teacher says today you will learn how to subtract using a number line.

Step 2: Intro; The teacher will have a big piece of butcher paper taped to the board with a line
drawn on and a zero in the center of the line. Then the teacher will put the number 10 a little
ways down from the zero. Off to the side the teacher will put 3, 7, 15, and 22 on the board. Then
teacher will then ask for students to come up to the board and put where they think the numbers
will go on the line. The teacher will then say this is your number line.
Step 3: Then teacher will then show their own number line one the Smart Board. The teacher will
then start the power point lesson.
Step 4: Reviewing; the arrows on the number line show that the line can go on forever in either
direction. Number lines can show any kinds of number, show different number lines with the
different numbers. Then show that there are many ways to count with the number lines by 1 tick,
3 tick, or 5 ticks.
Step 5: Lesson; The teacher will say that the number increases as you move right and the number
decreases as you move left. Then the teacher will go into an example: Jane has 38 candy bars.
Her little brother Jimmy eats 20 of them. How many candy bars does Jane have left? We will
then subtract 20 from 38. On the number line counting by 10s well will locate 38 and find that
38 is not on the number line. So well will find the number closest to 18 which is 40. Then we
will move two spaces to the left and arrive at 38. Then we can subtract 20 by going back 10s.
We go back one 10 to arrive at 28 then another 10 to arrive at 18. Meaning 38-20=18 and Jane
only has 18 candy bars left.
Step 6: The teacher says now you have learned how to subtract using a number line.
Step 7: Guided Practice; The teacher will have some number lines on the Smart Board. Then they
will randomly pick students one by one to go up to the number line and do one of the following

problems: 58-36, 42-12, 73-52, and 31-5. The teacher will then hand out a double sided
worksheet. The first side has ten number line subtraction problems that the students will do
together at their tables. The teacher will give then 5 minutes to start working. Then the teacher
will go around to each table and help the students with any problems they have questions on.
Step 8: Independent Practice; The students will then be told to flip the paper over with another
ten problems for them to silently do. This side will be graded.
Step 9: Once graded the teacher will give extended practice on the IPads to those who
understand. The teacher will then take the remaining students aside and show them how to do it
again. The teacher will also give the group of students practice problems for everyone to do
together.
Step 10: The teacher will have the students write in their IPad journals what they have learned
from the lesson.
Materials and Resources needed: pencil, paper, Smart Board, butcher paper, markers, activity
sheet, and power point
Assessment: The other side of the sheet will be the students independent practice which will be
graded.
