Nobel Prize to Women in Physiology or Medicine (Part Two)

In last post, we have give a brief introduction about the latest 5 woman Nobel laureates in
Physiology or Medicine. This post is to cover the rest 7 excellent women.
The 7th : Linda B. Buck
Linda B. Buck (1947-), an American biologist best known for her work on the olfactory system.
For their work on olfactory receptors, she along with Richard Axel, were awarded the 2004
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
The 6th : Christiane Nsslein-Volhard
Christiane Nsslein-Volhard (1942-), is a German biologist. She won the Nobel Prize in
Physiology or Medicine in 1995, together with Eric Wieschaus and Edward B. Lewis, for their
research on the genetic control of embryonic development.
The 5th : Gertrude B. Elion
Gertrude B. Elion (1918-1999), was an American biochemist and pharmacologist. She shared
1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with George H. Hitchings and Sir James Black.
She developed quantities of novel drugs, using innovative research methods that would later
lead to the development of the AIDS drug AZT.
The 4th : Rita Levi-Montalcini
Rita Levi-Montalcini (1909-2012), an Italian scientists worked in neurobiology. She shared
1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Stanley Cohen for the discovery of nerve
growth factor (NGF).
The 3rd : Barbara McClintock
Barbara McClintock (1902-1992), an American scientist and cytogeneticist. She was awarded
the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of genetic transposition. Of
note, she is the only woman to receive an unshared Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine up
to now.
The 2nd : Rosalyn Yalow
Rosalyn Yalow (1921-2011), an American medical physicist. She was awarded the 1977
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Roger Guillemin and Andrew Schally for
the development of the radioimmunoassays of peptide hormones.
The 1st : Gerty Cori
Gerty Cori (1896-1957), a Czech-American biochemist who was the third woman and the first
American woman to win a Nobel Prize. And the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in
Physiology or Medicine. She won the prize together with her husband Carl and Argentine
physiologist Bernardo Houssay in 1947 for their discovery of the course of the catalytic
conversion of glycogen.
