Electricity and Magnetism Day 1

Grade 5, Science, Electricity and Magnetism

Teacher:
Date:

Jim Cain
Day 1

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

5-5 Demonstrate safe methods for the study of magnetism and electricity,
identify methods for measurement and control, and apply techniques for
evaluating magnetic and electrical properties of materials.
Recognize and appreciate the potential dangers involved in using sources of electrical
currents:

understand that household electrical currents are potentially dangerous and

not a suitable source for experimentation
understand that small batteries are a relatively safe source of electricity, for
experimentation and study, but that care should be taken to avoid short
circuits
understand that short circuits may cause wires to heat up, as well as waste the
limited amount of energy in batteries.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. be able to identify common sources of electrical current.
2. be able to identify the dangers associated with mains electrical current.
3. be able to explain the relative danger of currents produced by small batteries.
4. be able to recognize a short circuit.

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Key Questions:

Products/Performances:

Ability to recognize objects which utilize AC current.

Recognition of household batteries as generally safe to handle.
Ability to recognize a short circuit and the corresponding effects.
Big Question: How can we safely work with electricity?
What are the characteristics of electrical devices that are safe to work with by hand?
Are household batteries dangerous?
What are the effects of a short circuit?
Ability to perform required elements of the circuit laboratory.
Students are expected to articulate the dangers of electricity.

Learning Activity #1

Introduction
Video clip of electrical arc
Discuss what will be learned during the lesson.
Discuss how the effects of electricity and magnetism have profound effects
on our lives via all the laborsaving and automation that exists.

Teacher directed discussion.
What are your rules at home for electrical safety?
Students will vocally share their electrical safety practices.
Students will identify household sources of current.
concurrent
The discussion will be formatively assessed to gauge approximate
understanding.
Electrical Safety Video - Dexter Duck - Electrical Safety Video
7
Students will watch safety video.
Discuss anything learned from the video (formative feedback)
Students will identify what happens when electricity passes through ones
body.
3
The discussion will be formatively assessed to gauge approximate
understanding.
Circuit Laboratory
Students will be presented a quick analogy of circuits to a river flowing in a
loop (this will be expanded in later lessons).
Students will be put into groups of 4, pairing stronger with weaker students.
17
Each group will be assigned a station and given a worksheet to record their
findings.
Students will:
Experiment with the safety of low voltage DC sources and record their
observations. (Can you feel current in you close the circuit with your finger?)
Experiment with making completed circuits (lightbulbs to demo)
Experiment with short circuits and record their observations.
Verbally describe the effects on a small wire or fuse that is used to short a
circuit.
Verbally describe what they reason the effect of a short circuit is on battery
life.
Cliffhanger/Closure
Perform interactive review of important take-aways.
Assign online activity/gadget to be completed prior to next lesson.

The initial lesson lays the foundation for further scaffolding. It is assumed that students
are bringing in a modicum of knowledge from their home life regarding safe electrical
practices and recognizing electrical hazards. This lesson will introduce students to basic
circuits and a very rudimentary idea of current, these ideas will be expanded upon in the
coming lessons.
