CONCLUSIONS
Parts of a Conclusion Paragraph:
- Topic sentence should summarize
ideas from thesis
- Supporting sentences which
summarize main points of your
claim
- Closing sentence(s)

CONCLUSIONS
Strategies for Writing a Conclusion:
- Should look back on the claim (thesis) of the
essay and use its supporting details (body
paragraphs) to show how the point of the essay
was made
- Summarize what youve written without sounding
redundant
- Consider the main points you want to get across
- Use your introduction as a guide for concluding
the main points that you addressed there. Your
intro should be general, but your conclusion
should specify your ideas that you presented.

CONCLUSION PARAGRAPHS
Strategies for Writing a Conclusion (cont.):
- What is the final thought you want your readers
to have when finished reading your essay?
- Should give a final word or thought on how
youve proved your thesis
- Play the so what game: when you read a
statement from the conclusion, ask yourself, so
what? or why should anybody care?
- By summarizing the main points and examples
you used for your essay, you have the
opportunity to show the reader how all of these
ideas fit together

CONCLUSIONS
Things to Avoid:
- Simply reciting your thesis
- Bringing up new ideas
- Beginning with unnecessary, overused phrases (in
conclusion, in summary, in closing, as shown in the
essay)
- Making sentimental, emotional appeals that are out of
character with the rest of the essay
- Introducing new evidence that isnt easily understood
by the reader without being thoroughly contextualized
- The thats my story and Im sticking to it or we shall
overcome attitude
- Keeping the reader in suspense by making your
conclusions mysterious; provide an analytical
discussion on the topic in academic style

CONCLUSIONS
Closing Sentence:
-

Gives the reader a sense of closure

Should be your last word on the subject
Demonstrate the importance of your ideas
Propel your reader to a new view of the
subject
- End on a positive note
- Should make your readers glad that they
read your paper

CONCLUSION EXAMPLE
Example:
When Junior sees his father is forced to kill Oscar, the dog,
it changes his entire view on his life and future. He
understands how poverty forces people to make difficult
choices no one should ever have to make. Junior realizes he
does not want to be put in this kind of position when he is an
adult. Although this moment is traumatizing for Junior,
sometimes it takes a moment like this to help a person
decide to take action and change their life for the better. It is
these types of moments which forever shape a persons
perspective and influences them to take real steps toward a
better future. Although it is difficult to recognize at the time,
a tragic moment like this one can be the best thing that
happens to you.
