Lesson One

Reflective Self Evaluation

23 September 2015

Class/Lesson: Mathematics (partitioning) Year 4 and 5

What were the main outcomes of your lesson and to what extent did you achieve them?
The main outcomes were for the students to recognize 0 as a place holder and to
learn/consolidate ability to add six digit numbers. For L and K, only the first outcome was achieved.
For M the first outcome was achieved, with the second attempted.

What were the two most successful aspects of the lesson and your lesson plan in terms of:
1. Your development as a teacher?
I learnt that some lessons do not stay on plan often due to student participation level and
comprehension. I knew three ways to explain, however, I didnt think to go back to the
previous step (hundreds) to explain the theory of the concept. I asked Jill to help me at
this stage of the lesson.
2. What did the learners gain from the lesson?
M gained confidence that she knew how to do most of what was attempted, she learnt
about bridging from 9 units to 10s/100s. L consolidated his learning up to 1000s with
partitioning. K consolidated learning of 0 as a place value holder, and bridging and
expanding sums to see all parts.
Were there any aspects of your lesson and/or lesson plan that were less successful? Why do you
think this was? If you were able to teach the same lesson again, what two changes would you
make?
The less successful aspect for the boys was the worksheet (a common tool in the classroom).
The boys were distracted and not interested and not understanding the theory and practicality of the
work after explanations. I forgot about the other worksheets I could have used to help them go back to
basics to understand further. I would change the lesson to only using 10s, 100s, and 1000s, and use
worksheet layouts the students were used to.

What two aspects of your teaching and/or planning do you intend to work on in the next lesson?
I intend to change how I manage distracted learners. Not sure if I work on getting students to
do the work, or let them come back on their own when other students are continuing. I think, in
hindsight, L would have rejoined the group if I didnt give him the attention he was after by
distracting. I used the consequences plan student moved to orange on the tree. I would like to focus
on going back to basics when explaining.

What two questions would you like to ask your Mentor/colleagues in feedback?
How do you engage students to come back to correct task? How do you plan a lesson around
what the students know, then when lesson delivered students suddenly dont know?
