Definitions for Power Train and Cutting Mechanism

Cutting Mechanism
Rotor- In a rotary electric motor, the rotor is the moving part which rotates due to
the torque developed about its axis. In a plastic grinder, knives are attached
around the rotors diameter, which rotates them in order to supply the necessary
grinding action that granulates the scrap plastic by crushing the material
against the stationary knives.
Rotating Knives and Bed Knives- These are blades that are used to cut up the
plastic. The rotating knives are affixed to the rotator and turn at a predetermined velocity, which depends on the power being supplied to the motor.
The bed knives are fixed and typically appear in pairs. These two types of knives
operate together to cut the plastic with a scissor-like action. High shear knives
are used in these applications, with materials that readily absorb energy.
Screen Mesh- The screen is located just below the motor. The hole size of the
screen regulates the size of the particles which are allowed to pass on to the
collection tray. The smaller the diameter of the holes, the longer the time needed
for the knives to shred the plastic into the required granule size.

Power Train
Motor- The motor in a granulator provides the motive power which is used to turn
the rotor and accomplish the cutting action required to granulate the scrap
plastic. The size of the motor depends heavily on the size and type of plastic that
needs to be granulated.
Shafts, pulleys, Belts?
Bearings- Ball bearings are used to diminish the friction between rotating parts
as well as to transmit axial and radial loads. The balls, situated between an inner
ring and an outer ring are used to transmit these loads. The inner ring rotates in
one direction, causing the balls to rotate in the same direction as they roll in the
opposite one. It is this rolling motion of the balls that reduces friction.
