FLAME OFFERS YOU MORE OF WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM ATOOL JOINT SUPPLIER. Dring fo ol and gas today is more demanding than ever. And when you consider the demands are greatest on your dril string and your drill sting hangs by a tool Joint, you need to give extra special Consideration to your tool joint manufacturer. We think you should consider Flame first of al. Flame Industries, Inc., is proud to be one of the petroleum industry's leading too! joint manufactures. In addition, your too! joint business is our main business, and well continue to set the pace in technology, continue to utlize every quality check possible, and continue to reduce our lead times to deliver the tool joints you need... when you need them. Flame is biggest where it counts the most: in equipment, ‘experience and expertise. Flame now serves the petroleum industry with three manufacturing facilities: One in Chaska, Minne- soa, one in Houston, Texas and ‘one in Tioga, North Dakota. This gives us over 100,000 square feet of manufacturing space and makes us one of the three largest tool joint companies in the world. All Flame Tool Joints are manufac- tured and harcfaced on the latest NIC and computer-controlled ‘equipment in our Chaska facility. ‘And the quality control checks that have given Flame Tool Joints the dependability edge down hole start here....and don't stop until your pipe stands jointed on your rig. ‘And our past experience is the key to our total success at Flame from manufacturing to welding to superior quality contro. Although we've been a major tool joint supplier for less than ten years, we've had over 45 years combined experience in important areas such as heat treating, inertia welding, ‘and working with computer-con- trolled and N/C equipment. That's ‘as much as anyone else in the industry. That's why our product is second to none, Flame’s Tool Joint manufacturing standards are the industry's most stringent. Flame Tool Joints are rough machined from either heavy-walled seamless alloy tub- Ao Foe ing oF forgings and heat treated in automatically controlled batcn-type furnaces. After the tool joints have been inspected for material flaws and checked for proper hardness, they are threaded on numerically controlled turning lathes. The thread on every joint is then ‘gauged to check conformity with API Standards using ground and hardened ring and plug working gauges and profile gauges. These intum are checked periodically against reference master gauges Certified by the National Bureau of Standards. Thread lead and taper ate also checked periodically It the customer specifies hardtac- ing, the tungsten carbide is applied to the joint prior to the joint being welded to the pipe body. The joints are carefully preheated and the tungsten carbide hardfacing is applied under precisely controlled conditions using the inert arc pro- ‘cess. The resulting high-quality, ‘wear-resistant surface is uniform, low in porosity and extends the life of the tool joint. is unsurpassed. Flame Tool Joints are inertia welded on one of our five welding ines in Houston and Chaska. We're the only tool joint manufacturer to use the superior inertia welding process exclusively I's another reason why our down hole depend- ability rte is 50 high, Inertia welding has advantages ‘ver the conventional electric flash-butt type weld because iner- tia welding is the most controlled welding process yet devised, virtu- ally eliminating operator error and always assuring precise alignment Of tool joint to pipe body The too! joint (see figure below) is held in a rotating chuck with a series of flywheels attached (a). ‘THE INERTIA WELDING PROCESS Cat ap Satis The pipe body is held stationary in a fixture that can absorb the high torques and thrusts developed in the inertia welding process. An electric-hydraulic system acceler- ates the flywheel and chuck assembly to a pre-calculated rpm. The drive is then disconnected automatically and the tool joint is thrust against the stationary pipe body (b). The resulting kinetic energy is quickly converted to fic tional heat bringing the metal sur- faces to a plastic state and causing the parts to weld together (c). The wold is completed when the fly- wheel stops (4) During the weld, metal atthe inter- face is expelled into the flash ring thus assuring the weld is free of impurities and voids. The weld formed by the inertia welding pro- cess is a strong, solid state bond with a narrow heat affected zone and a fine grain structure The weld area is then heat treated Using specially designed solid state induction equipment to obtain ‘maximum strength in the pipe upset and in the alloy too! joint. Uniform rings of flash are formed during welding on both the inside and outside surfaces. The internal flash rings are removed, leaving @ smooth surface free of grooves and stress concentration points. ‘The external flash rings are removed by a unique abrasive belt system leaving a smooth transition between the upset end of the pipe and the elevator shoulder. ‘The weld area and the upset ond of each pipe is carefully checked Using a wet particle magnuflux inspection system (black light test- ing). As a further check for faults or inclusions in the upset end of the pipe not visible on the surface, this area is carefully scanned using specially designed ultrasonic inspection equipment. Finally, the ‘complete pipe is checked for con- formity with API dimension standards. We're rewriting the book on quality control every day. Because drill pipe failures result from hidden defects in the upset end area of the pipe, Flame continues to develop the most advanced non-destructive testing equipment to sort out flaws that could lead to future problems down the hole. Flame is the acknowledged leader in non-destructive testing among all too! joint manufacturers. We've built our reputation on quality con- trol. In fact, many of our quality checks are so advanced we had to develop the procedures ourselves. Every Flame Too! Joint goes through 57 separate quality checks from raw material to welded joint We institute 100% checks in many areas such as thread gauging, ultrasonic testing and back light testing. We have a 20,000 square- foot facilty in Houston solely dedicated to quality control. Atthe Houston facil, specially trained operators run every piece of inertia welded pipe through visual inspection, magnetic particle inspection (black lighi), ultrasonic inspection and Rockwell hardness tosis. We're now developing a unique acoustic emission testing technique, using sound to allow inspectors to “look” inside the upset end of dril pipe under stress. This test has proven valuable to sort out defects of any orientation. If any jointed pipe fails any one of these tests, the pipe is either reworked or scrapped. Flame's hardfacing increases too! Joint life and is applied to the tool joint prior to the joint being welded to the pipe body. It is applied under very closely controlled conditions resulting in a uniform, low porosity, wear-resistant surface. Flame hardfacing is available in either a flush or raised configura- tion, using fine of standard tung- sten carbide particles. With the flush design, F-1000 (fine particle) or F-8000 (standard particle), the tungsten carbide surface is flush or slightly below the tool joint surface. With the raised configuration, -1000 or R-3000, the tungsten carbide surface is flush to approx- imately Ye" above the tool joint surface. Flame's special hardfacing “Super- ‘Smooth’ (Series 5000), is a non- abrasive hardfacing in which the tungsten carbide particles are buried below the joint surface and covered over with a layer of hard metal. This special hardfacing is recommended when casing wear is a problem, Choose from 5 Flame Hardfacing Types Series Type Description F000 Fine particle, fush type Five continuous bands of high density hardfacing extending ‘over wear area including %" on tapered shoulder 7000 Fine particle, raised pe | Same as F-1000 except wear surface talsed Vx” above tool joint surface 3000 ‘Standard particle, flush type | Same coverage as F-1000 but uses coarse particles of tungsten carbide 2000 Standard parce, raised ype | Same as F-8000 except wear surlace raised oz” above tool joint surtace $5000 Super-Smooth Five continuous bands of tungsten carbide hardlacing extending 3%" over wear area Including %6" on tapered shoulder covered by a continuous layer of hard metal lush surface ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH YOUR LOCAL SUPPLY STORE.
