Short Writing Assignment
1) Currently women are being affected by globalization in both positive
and negative ways. For example in the U.S. women are becoming
more involved in politics and also becoming higher up officials, some of
the standards for treatment of women are becoming better especially
in western society. In my opinion I think that globalization on women is
effecting them in a good manner overall. Instead of being thought of
as lesser human beings they are being treated as equals in more
developed nations. Globalizations goal is to better the world as a
whole and develop other nations so it makes sense that as the nations
become more developed women are treated better. Huffington Post
says the following, Globalization, the freer movement of people,
money, goods and ideas across borders was bound to do wonders for
gender parity. Some of the issues that do occur with globalization
and women is that as women begin to work in less developed countries
they are paid an inferior wage to men. A few examples where
globalization served to help women is in Mexico, where employment
opportunities have increased leading to women in better paying jobs. I
also think that globalization as it pertains to the US favors women.
Another example would be furthering education. Statistics from UNCChapel Hill show that women applying to medical schools and dental
schools get into these school with on average .3 points below the
acceptance rate. From this statistic we can infer that women are being
presented easier opportunities to obtain higher education simply
because theyre considered diverse, almost as if they were a different
race. One problem that was discussed in the article, Gender Equality
and Womens Empowerment, is that statistics have shown that as
women grow more educated the rate of some diseases such as AIDS
have began to fall but in undeveloped countries women dont have
access to education so they can work to support their families.
2) A solution to this problem could be set wages for both male and
female workers in particular jobs. For a manufacturing or production
job the employee, rather male or female, should be paid based off how
much they produce. I also must add that in western society today
sometimes being female doesnt hurt. In some service industries,
restaurants for example, females have an opportunity to make more
money than males. In more developed countries these issues level off
but in less developed countries human instinct sets in more so. What I
mean by that is that men are stronger and can do more physical
(mostly agricultural) work and therefore they have more power. I think
that theres too big of an issue of wanting to be treated equally in the
U.S. and in other countries and globalization just exacerbates that. A
solution for the problem that arises from uneducated women in

undeveloped countries could be emphasizing female education, which
would lead to a reduction in viruses and disease.
