Tasks/Activities

Tell students that today in the marketplace all discounts will be

removed and instead there will be a sales tax implemented in the
market.

Pose Question: How do we calculate the price of a product after

20% sales tax?

Silent Discussion Activity

o Split students into groups of 3. Give each group of three a

40 mins

separate piece of large paper with the question written at the

top and each member in the group a different colour.
o The first part of the discussion (10 mins) will be completely
silent. Group members can only write their
thoughts/comments/questions on the large paper without
speaking to one another. They can then write in response to
what their group members write. The groups will discuss
the question at hand in this way.
o Teacher can circulate and add comments during the silent
discussion to guide groups or ask questions about their
responses.
o For the second part of the activity (10 mins), students will
silently move and visit each of the other large pieces of
paper and read the silent discussions of other groups. They
can also add their own thoughts/comments/questions to
other groups discussions
o For the final part of the activity (10 mins), students will go
back to their paper and discuss what was written during
both parts of the discussion. They can now freely talk about
the different methods they have come up with.

Enter into a large group discussion about which methods

will work and which will not. Guide students to understand
multiple methods for calculating the price after 20% sales
tax.

Some methods can include:

o Calculating 20% of the original price and then adding that
amount to the original price.
o Calculating 120% of the original price.
o Using estimation and benchmarks: Divide by 10 to find
10%, then multiply by 2 to find 20%, then add that to the
original price.

Students will now enter back into the Marketplace Activity. They

will have to include 5% GST in every transaction that takes place.

Students must keep a log of all their transactions for the day.

Students must agree on the calculation of the final price after 5%

GST. They will need to successfully communicate their method of
calculation to their peers to come to this agreement.

Teacher will circulate to help with calculations, to ensure students

are following the rules of the marketplace, and to assess
understanding.

Exit Slips: Ask students to write down one method for calculating
the cost of a pair of shoes after 5% GST.

ELL students are encouraged to come up with and use a visual

representation of various methods (with the help of peers and
teacher). They can express their ideas visually or symbolically if
they are struggling to communicate the method using words.

During the marketplace, students who are really struggling can use
the aid of a calculator for their transactions.

For students excelling, we can extend the idea of percent increase

past simply calculating the price after GST. Invite them into an
inquiry as they go through the marketplace - what if the prices of
all the products in our marketplace increased by 2%? 10%? What is
the effect on your transactions?

Having the students write in different colours during the Silent

Discussion Activity will allow the teacher to assess students
mathematical thinking and communication.

Peer assessment will take place as students are adding

thoughts/comments/questions to other groups discussions.

Students will hand in their log book of all transactions for the day.
The teacher will then provide formative assessment in these log
books about how the student can improve.

The teacher can use the feedback on the exit slips to assess overall
understanding of the concept.
