solve linear equations with rational number coefficients.

WV CSOs
M.8.EE.7: solve linear equations in one variable.
a. Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution,
infinitely many solutions or no solutions. Show which of these
possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given
equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form x
= a, a = a, or a = b results (where a and b are different numbers).
b. Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including
equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the
distributive property and collecting like terms.
M.8.EE.8: analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
a. Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two
variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because
points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously.
b. Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically
and estimate solutions by graphing the equations.
c. Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear
equations in two variables.

Differentiated Instruction/Adaptation/Intervention

If students are having trouble understanding how to solve linear

equations of one variable work through worksheet 12-2 with the entire
class and have them answer the questions while showing them the
correct steps.
If students are still having trouble show the class a video on solving
linear equations which can be found here:

Procedures
Introduction/Lesson Set

Give a brief introduction of myself and let the class know what the
topic of the lesson that is going to be taught.
Write the objectives and student outcomes of the lesson verbally and
write them on the board.
Ask students if they know what a linear equation is and if they know
how to solve them.

Body and Transition

Tell the students a linear equation is an algebraic equation in which

each term is either a constant or the product of a constant and a single
variable. Linear equations can have one or more variables.

Write the following equations on the board and tell students these are
examples of linear equations: y=2x+1, 5x=6+3y, y/2=3-x.
Graph y=2x+1 on the board to show that a linear equation is a straight
line. Tell students when x increases, y increases twice as fast which
gives you 2x. When x is 0, y is already 1 which gives you +1. Therefor
you have y=2x+1
Give students the equation 2x+4=10 and solve for x. Work problem
out step by step and ask students if they have any questions.
Have students solve for x given 5x=10+3x. Once students have the
answer, work it out step by step on the board.
Tell the students a system of equation just means more than one
equation. A system of equations is more than one line.
Let students know the solution of a system of equations is where the
lines intersect.
Ask students how many solutions a system of linear equations can
have. Let them know there can be zero solutions, one solution, or
infinite solutions.
Let the students know if the equations intersect they have one
solution. If the equations are parallel they have no solutions. If the
equations are the same line then there are infinite solutions.
Give students the two equations (x+y=6 and -3x+y=2) and show how
to find the solutions if any. Work step by step until you reach the
answer (1,5).
Give students the two equations (x+y=3 and 2x+2y=6) and have
them try to find a solution. Once they figure it, explain that they are
the same line and that the second equation is just multiplied by two.
So there are infinite solutions.
Give students the two equations (y-10=5x and y-5x=8) and have them
try to find a solution. Once they have tried explain how they are
parallel to one another therefor there are zero solutions.
Ask and answer any questions that the students may have.

Closure

Give students worksheet 10-2 Practice and have them work

individually.
Once students complete worksheet 10-2 Practice have them turn them
in and assign textbook problems 1-20, 22, 25, 30-42.

Diagnostic:

Ask students before the lesson what a linear equation is. Have them
give a few examples and write them on the board.
With the problems given by the students have them solve for x. Then
work the solutions out step by step.

If the students do not know what a linear equation is or how to solve

for x give a few examples and work out the solutions as a whole group.

Formative:

While students are working on handout 10-2 Practice walk around the
room to see if students are working and if they are getting the write
solutions.
Ask students multiple times if they have any questions and if they do
answer the questions on the board or show how to work the problem
out.

Summative:

Assign worksheet 10-2 Practice to be collected and graded once

completed.
Once every student finishes the worksheet ask the class to give
examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution.
Assign text book problems 1-20, 22, 25, 30-42 to be turned in the
following day to be graded.

Extended Activities
If students finish early

Put the students into groups of two and have them come up with an
equation with one solution, an equation with zero solutions, and an
equation with infinite solutions and have them share with the class.

If lesson finishes early

Give a few more examples of solving linear equations and graph the
equations on the board.

If technology fails

Bring extra batteries and calculators so if they do not function properly.

Bring laptop and speakers incase smart board does not work.
