ASSESSMENT 3: PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE & REFLECTION

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EXPERIENCE #1
Year 11 Physical Education- SAC Revision Lesson- Amazing Race Activity
DATE: TUESDAY 18th AUGUST
TIME: 1:20pm-3:00pm
STUDENT COHORT: 25 x Year 11 Students
TEACHER IN CHARGE: Danielle Murray (Head of HaPE/Sport at PCSS & Classroom Teacher)
SETTING: Classroom and Basketball Court (PCSS)
FOCUS ELEMENTS: Group Collaboration, Effective Revising, Student Engagement
The Year 11 Physical Education Class spent a double period studying for an upcoming SAC on Injury
Prevention, Sports Ethics, Motor Skills and Coaching.
The purpose of the lesson was to encourage students to revise efficiently for the SAC as well as to
ask any questions they may have.
I designed the lesson so that it was in an Amazing Race style, whereby teams work together to
answer questions relating to the 4 different topics on the SAC. Each team had 4 envelopes which had
6 questions in each. There were 4 teams of 6, and each student had to answer one question for each
envelope.
Teams would receive their first envelope after completing a set task (completing 50 catches of a bean
bag each) then would spread across the basketball court, to discuss the answers to the questions.
Once they had written their answers down, they would come up to me and read out the answers,
before completing another set task (shooting 5 free throws) and then receiving the next envelope.
This activity allowed for students to collaborate together, and this was highlighted by students helping
each other to answer questions, which is an effective way to revise by identifying content which they
were unsure of and discussing the correct answers.
The activity was competitive as the reward for the winning team was chocolates, and this enhanced
the students engagement, as the students worked efficiently to find answers. As teams were
randomly allocated through being given a playing card with the suit to determine what team they were
on, it meant that students were not just in friendship groups, and this further enhanced the quality of
the lesson as there was a variance in students knowledge of each topic.

The Hobsons Bay Secondary Division Competition was held at Newport Athletics track involving
students from Years 7-12 from various schools.
My role involved officiating on the Triple Jump event, with the assistance of 2 Year 12 VCAL students.
I arrived early to help set up the event, including setting up the required equipment for Triple Jump,
and to assign roles for the 2 helpers I had working with me.
As there were over 6 schools competing, it was important to communicate effectively with both the
students and the head officials who were expecting events to be run on time.
I ensured that each age group for Triple Jump received 2 verbal announcements over the
microphone, so that students whose names were written down to jump, were given the opportunity to
come over and compete.
As there were multiple events running simultaneously, it was important to let students move to more
immediate events and then to come back and finish off their jumps. However it was also important to
ensure that events were not running behind.
Through constant communication with students, we were able to run the Triple Jump event ahead of
time, and had extra students join in the event. Despite some not being sure of the technique involved
in Triple Jump, I was able to spend time running through the technique involved in the event. Students
were all given a practice jump before recording 3 jumps with the longest successful jump being
awarded the winner for the age group.
The day finished ahead of time through the effective communication of the officials on each event,
and by assigning helpers roles, it made it easier for myself to work with the students to ensure they
were jumping correctly and successfully. This led to positive experiences for the students and greater
student engagement.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EXPERIENCE #3

Hobsons Bay Secondary Basketball Intermediate Boys and Girls Division Finals
DATE: WEDNESDAY 2nd SEPTEMBER
TIME: 9:30am-2:30pm
STUDENT COHORT: 8 x Year 10 Students
TEACHER IN CHARGE: Jules Damschke (A Team Coach)
SETTING: Altona Stadium, Altona
FOCUS ELEMENTS: Coaching, Team Building, and Building Relationships with students
The Hobsons Bay Secondary Basketball Intermediate Boys Division Finals were held at Altona
Stadium with 2 teams representing Point Cook Senior.
I was given the opportunity to Coach the Point Cook B team, which had 8 students representing the
school.
Having not Coached Basketball before, this was a fantastic learning opportunity, to utilise the previous
coaching skills I had, and to apply them to another sport such as basketball.
This was also a great opportunity to build relationships with the students, as I had not previously
taught them, so was able to converse with them about their backgrounds in basketball and where they
currently play.

As we were the B team, the goal of the side was to work together as a team with my main coaching
points being Ensure you communicate together and work together as one.
The students responded well to this and were exceptional in ensuring all their teammates were
included throughout the games.
Substitutions were regularly made so that all students received equal playing time, and this enhanced
their engagement, as they were spending only a few brief minutes off each game.
The team were well supported by the A Team in the first game as they had the bye. The B Team
successfully beat Bayside College, and the students were ecstatic with their teamwork.
Unfortunately the next two games were against strong Williamstown High teams, meaning that the
side was eliminated. However, the students attitudes towards working together and letting the result
take care of itself, meant that it was an enjoyable experience and a fantastic learning opportunity to
Coach a High School Basketball team.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EXPERIENCE #4

Year 10 Physical Education- Group Fitness/Pilates Lesson
DATE: FRIDAY11th SEPTEMBER
TIME: 1:20pm-3:00pm
STUDENT COHORT: 50 x Year 10 Students (2 x Year 10 classes)
TEACHER IN CHARGE: Danielle Murray (Mentor), Emma Carstairs (PE Teacher)
SETTING: Tennis Courts (PCSS)
FOCUS ELEMENTS: Delivery of Group Fitness Lesson, Class Management, Student Participation
Every Friday Periods 4 and 5 is the Practical Lesson for 2 x Year 10 Physical Education classes.
These lessons have been run by myself and another Pre Service Teacher Matt Carroll.
The lessons involve beginning as a whole group of students, who get changed and then complete a
warmup activity together, before splitting up into classes and complete an activity with one teacher (I
was taking Group Fitness, Matt was taking Pilates) before swapping.
This lesson involved us taking students through a warm up game of dodgeball, which required a lot of
class management, as we were required to move 50 students from the gymnasium change rooms to
the tennis courts, and then had to assign work for those students who were not participating.
Upon finishing the warmup my class came with me to complete a group fitness session. Students
completed a circuit of 8 exercises which lasted for one minute each. This ensured that all students
were participating throughout, and by making it time based, it catered for students of different abilities
who could work at a steadier pace and still push themselves.
Each exercise was explained, with students modelling the exercise for the rest of their peers. This
made it easier for me to then walk around when the students were completing the exercises and to
offer positive reinforcement and to correct any techniques which needed to be fixed.
Upon completing the circuit students participated in a team race whereby they were in 2 lines in a
plank position, and the person at the head of the line had to jump over the legs of the rest of their
team and run around back to the start. This activity was fantastic as the students enjoyed the
competition and were excited about their team winning.

When this was completed the classes swapped, and I took the other Year 10 class through the same
lesson.
This provided me with an opportunity to review the previous class and to make appropriate
adjustments to ensure students were engaged.
The second class were more engaged and demonstrated great participation as they were ready to run
around, having just completed a Pilates lesson. This made the lesson enjoyable and students found it
challenging but were able to work at a high intensity and they expressed that they thought the lesson
was fantastic.
