Unit Overview

This unit provides an introduction to health in year seven. Students

are made aware of the different dimensions and components of
health. Students will explore new avenues of thinking and through
group work and individual reflection students will understand how
their surroundings influence their identity and the world that they
live in.
Level of experience:
Students are new to the health subject and would have covered
basic principles throughout primary school but nothing as in depth
as this quite yet. Students will have a range of abilities and beliefs,
which will be taken into consideration whilst teaching the unit.
AusVELS
Through the provision of health knowledge, this domain develops
an understanding of the importance of personal and community
actions in promoting health and knowledge about the factors that
promote and protect the physical, social, mental and emotional
health of individuals, families and communities. Students
investigate issues ranging from individual lifestyle choices to
provision of health services by both government and nongovernment bodies. In investigating these issues, they explore
differing perspectives and develop informed positions. AusVELS
Principles of Learning & Teaching
1. The learning environment is supportive and productive:
This unit provides students with a safe environment where all
cultures and beliefs are encouraged and shared to gain a
greater understanding of identity and how it shapes different
people and cultures. Students will receive feedback on their
homework after every lesson and will have the opportunity to
share their work with the class.
2. The learning environment promotes independence,
interdependence and self-motivation: Students are
required to work independently throughout the unit and are
required to show self motivation whilst completing homework
tasks.
3. Students needs, backgrounds, perspectives and
interests are reflected in the learning program:
Students are able to explore a range of perspectives and
backgrounds whilst completing this unit. Student diversity in
the class will only benefit other classmates when responding
to different questions and tasks.

4. Students are challenged and supported to develop

deep levels of thinking and application: Students are
required to engage in deep level of thinking whilst talking
about their own journey and identity. Students are required to
question what it is that creates their identity and what health
means to them. They are required to think about what
constitutes healthy behaviour and the effects that some
behaviors can have on your health.
5. Assessment practices are an integral part of teaching
and learning: Formative assessment will be made
throughout the unit based on completion of homework,
attendance and involvement in class discussion.
6. Learning connects strongly with communities and
practice beyond the classroom: Students will be able to
transfer their knowledge learnt in this unit into everyday life to
continue to make healthy decisions to impact their life
positively and have a greater understanding of what impacts
their identity and the influencing factors on ones life.
Entry, exit and class behavioral outcomes
Students will line up outside of the class until they are invited inside
by the teacher, they will then be addressed on the learning intention
and re visit any homework that is due. During class students are
expected to actively participate and treat each other and the
teacher with respect. At the completion of the class the teacher will
re-visit the learning intention with students and discuss the
homework required for the next lesson
