-Describe characteristics
of trees and the
interaction of trees with
other living things in the
environment
Activity 1: Students
will visit three different
sites within Kootenay,
Jasper and Lake Louise
National Park (One
recent burn, one
recovering 12 year old
burn and one site that
has had no recent fire)
-Students will conduct a
silent sketch at each site
-They will also make
observations about the
dominant plant in each
area, any evidence of
animal activity, the
diversity of plants
within a square metre,
evidence of human
actions to help (or
hinder) forest recovery
-They will determine
how to use the data they
collect to make a graph
that will aid them to
determine the health of
each forest
-Using the evidence
they collect at each site
they will make a claim
as to the health of each
forest ecosystem
-Worksheets
-Bus
-Measuring Tape
-Binoculars
-First Aid Kit
-Plaster of Paris
-Quadrat
-Camera
-Crayons
-Tree Corer
Summative
assessment: Their field
trip worksheets will be
included in their forest
fire journal and their
reasoning for whether
each forest is a healthy
forest ecosystem will be
graded.

68 Apply observation
and inference skills to
recognize and interpret
patterns and to
distinguish a specific
pattern from a group of
similar patterns.
8. Recognize evidence of
recent human activity, and
recognize evidence of animal
activity in a natural outdoor
setting.
9. Observe a set of footprints,
and infer the direction and
speed of travel.
10. Recognize that evidence
found at the scene of an
activity may have unique
characteristics that allow an
investigator to make
inferences about the
participants and the nature of
the activity, and give
examples of how specific
evidence may be used.
