Unit Overview

Learning Intentions
Knowledge

This unit provides students with the opportunity to

develop a wide range of new sport-specific skills
and implement skills used from previous basketball
units in a new context. This unit is designed around
the game sense model in which students must
recognise tactics and develop the necessary skills
needed to overcome these. This includes students
playing in games which are progressive in difficulty
and introduce new concepts, scaffolding them to a
level where they are able to play using key
strategies in a full game setting. This unit also
provides students with the opportunity to be
selected for the schools inter-school basketball
team.

Students will know how

to shoot with their nondominant hand
Students will know how
many steps are
allowed in a lay-up

Skills

Students will be able

to dribble the ball
using both hands in
various activities.
Students will be able
to shoot using their
dominant hand
Students will be able
to make a right- and
left-handed lay-up
Student will be able
to apply the skill to
competitive game
situations
Students will have to
think tactically and
make decisions
whilst in game
situations.

Standards of Learning (Australian Curriculum - AusVELS)

Understanding

Students will
understand how to
effectively pass the
ball and when to
implement certain
passes for strategic
advantage
Students will
understand the
shooting technique
and are able to
utilise this skill in
drills and games
Students will apply
skills learnt thus far
whilst applying
defensive elements
to their game.

As students work towards the achievement of Level 7 and Level 8 standards in Health and Physical Education, they develop and refine a
range of movement and manipulative skills; for example, gymnastics routines and high-level ball skills such as shooting a basket in
basketball or spiking a volleyball. They participate in a variety of team and individual games and activities, using and building on skills
and strategies from other sports as well as continuing to develop new, sport-specific, skills.
Students engage in activities which develop strategic thinking and tactical knowledge to improve individual and team performance in
competitive sports or games. They collaborate with team members planning strategies and practising set plays for responding to
games-based tactical challenges. Students observe peer performance, developing and using criteria to provide precise feedback about
the performance of motor skills and tactics used in a specific sport or game. They also monitor and analyse their own performance.
Students undertake a variety of roles in team games (for example, player, coach, umpire or administrator) and reflect on their
experiences. They respect the right of others to participate. They reflect on their own personal and social behaviours in physical activity
settings, and how they contribute to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for learning and fair play.
