than ever.

We also look to the future and vow to continue what is now an annual tradition eagerly awaited by
participants and aficionados.

To everyone who supported the MARHOChampionships racing festivals through the past two decades,
please accept my sincere thanks, as we set as our sights on the years to come.

This years event metal
embodies concepts of prestige

20th MARHO Championships Racing Festival

7-8 November 2015
Santa Ana Park

Since then, the group has cemented its

position in the industry as a growth leader
seeking the upliftment and promotion
of the sport for the benefit of all its
stakeholders.
One of the most
significant accomplishments
of MARHO is the MARHO
Championships program,
initially known as the MARHO
Breeders Cup when it was
created in 1996 by MARHO
Chairman Leonardo M.
Javier Jr. and then-president
Aristeo G. Puyat.
From a simple event with
only two championships for
3YO horses, the MARHO
Championships program
has grown so popular
among racing fans that
it is among the most
awaited events of the
year. The 2004 edition
broke all sales records
when it was held at Santa
Ana Park in Makati City.

Mandaluyong
Mayor Benhur C. Abalos,
MARHO president in 2005,
arranged that years edition of
the MBC, the tenth anniversary of the
event. A Decade of Champions was the
theme for that year.
He also took charge of MARHO
activities from 2006 to 2009, including
the MARHO Founders Cup and the
Jade MARHO Breeders Cup of 2009,
commemorating MARHOs 35th
anniversary.

Eric R. Tagle, continued the MARHO legacy by way
of the 15th MARHO Cup Championships, tagged
MARHO Kinse, and the succeeding MARHO Swift
Sixteen, MARHO Daisy-Siete, and MARHO 18th
Edition.
Last year, the first under the leadership of president

Antonio G. de Ubago, was the occasion dubbed

MARHO Ruby, the 19th staging of the event in line
with the organizations landmark 40th anniversary.
This year, MARHO Platinum is the celebration
of the 20th staging of this iconic racing festival that
has become one of the sports annual traditions and a
proving ground for champions. n

makes the MARHOPCSO Platinum Sprint
a test of stamina and
finishing kick!
Five game contenders
will be vying for the honor of becoming the
MARHO Platinum PCSO Sprint Champion namely:
Barcelona (Art Moderne- Spanish Coin) owned
by Maverick Leonardo T. Javier, trained by Renato
Atong R. Yamco; the Ruben S. Tupas-trained
coupled entries of Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur
C. Abalos Jr., Cats Silver (Ultimate Goal - Cats Gold)
and Never Cease (Ultimate Goal-Never Left); Ik Hou
Van Jou (Wind Blown Lamborghini) of Ms. Leonora
S. Pasion, conditioned by Atoy C. Sordan, Jr.; and,
Sta. Clara Stockfarm, Inc.s Nemesis (Quaker RidgeKaindara Gold), trained by Nestor E. Manalang.
Records-wise, Never Cease, again employing the
services of its riding partner Jonathan Hernandez,
appears headed for victory based on the 1:09 it was
able to muster for 1,200-meters at Metroturf on more
than one occasion.
This fact exerts pressure on Nemesis to give
chase at once or try to wrest the lead early. If the
early challenge materializes or in anticipation of the
strategy, the tacticians of the coupled entry can opt to
have Cats Silver act as pacer.

MARHO officers surround MARHO founding chairman ECJ as he delivers a short

message at an event in 2006.

runners Barcelona and Ik Hou Van Jou and we can be
sure that the two runners will try and maximize the
long Sta. Ana stretch run although based on recent
runs, the distance may not favor Barcelona. n

he MARHO Juvenile Fillies has

historically been a favorite betting race for
the aficionados. Five promising champions
from the stables of Dr. Nick Cruz, Rafael
Abacan, George Raquidan, Antonio Tony V.
Tan Jr., and Stony Road Horse Farm will offer
bettors an even spread to choose from.

real flames

In any event, the 1:22 time for the 1,300-meter

distance it registered last September in Carmona
(which translates to about 1:19 or faster in Naic), may
yet prove to be insurmountable.

bowties n charms
never cease

In any event, a mistimed charge made by Chris

Garganta could prove to be weakening for both,
and thus leave the door open for late charges by the
other runners like versatile Ik Hou Van Jou, piloted
by Fernando Raquel Jr. whose 1:05 for 1,100-meters
turned in last Aug. 25 is about one second and a
fraction of second slower than what Never Cease can
do if left alone unbothered in the early stages of the
race.
Ik Hou Van Jou will however miss the services of
its regular rider who has understandably chosen to
guide Never Cease instead.

Familiarity might just work for Port Angeles

and her declared rider, regular pilot Mark Angelo T.
Alvarez, when they take on the track distance they
seem to be most comfortable with. Trained by Danilo
R. Dela Cruz, Port Angeles is a progeny of US-born
Cat Brulay out of Australian mare Teresina.
This Stony Road Horse Farm filly won three of
five races, failing in the 1,000-meter race on Aug.
30 won by Spectrum; and in the Philracom Juvenile
Fillies stakes race last Oct. 25 won by Subterranean
River, owing partly to a poor start and perhaps
because Port Angeles missed the services of its
favorite rider.

Raquidans Real Flames, however, appears to

have a different outcome in mind. To be steered by
a seasoned Class A jockey, Antonio B. Alcasid Jr.,
the connections of Real Flames naturally expect a
creditable performance. Oyets expert riding skills
may just be more than adequate to fashion a quick and
easy finish for this filly by Real Spicy out of Eternal
Flame.
This bay filly won its Oct. 5 assignment in
a field of eight runners with plenty to spare.
Also worth noting is that the time Real Flames
registered, a 1:03.2 in a field of seven runners
in its novato run at San Lazaro Leisure Park is a
shade quicker than that turned in by Port Angeles
in the latters own novato assignment at the same
track.
This Time not giving its best is not happening.
Tans bay filly, trained by Ruben S. Tupas, won by
only a neck last Oct. 9 in a longer 1,400-meter race in
Metro Turf with a time which is about a second shy of
that made by Port Angeles on Oct. 4 at the same track.
But, with This Time to be piloted by pacer master
Jonathan B. Hernandez, who is to say then that this
runner will not reign over the shorter distance? As
far as its connections are concerned, This Time, a
progeny of USA sire Warrior Song out of Australian
dam Almarli, everything in its favor will come to
be and, maybe This Time the victory will be theirs.
Besides, aside from Bowties and Charms, This Time
can brag of having competition experience at Santa
Ana Park.

from start to finish. Abacans promising champion
managed to win and place in most of its races. Who
knows if the Tupas training has already polished this
runner into a champion?
On the other hand, Dr. Cruzs Bowties and
Charms hopes to find magic in its new rider Jeff T.
Zarate. Trained by A. C. Sordan, Jr. this filly by Bwana
Bull (USA) out of Dream Romance (Aus) should avoid
a slow start with Zarate in the saddle and remain
within striking distance from the front runners in the
early part of the race; by the time the runners reach
the long home stretch of Santa Ana, it might have
more than charm left to fashion a victorious finish. n

Colts: 1,300 meters
T

By patricia S. dizon and comm. will j. a. de ungria

his years gems in the rough can be

found in the juvenile races. The stables
of Dr. Nick Cruz, Herminio S. Esguerra,
Antonio Tony V. Tan Jr., Makati Councilor
Ferdie T. Eusebio, and Stony Road Horse Farm
will showcase their two-year-olds bloodlines in
the MARHO-Platinum-Philracom Juvenile Colts
race.
The Danilo Dave Dela Cruz-trained Underwood
is likely to dominate the race banking on its
impressive wins in its last three outings. This quick
starter (Real Spicy-Kayumanggi) owned by Stony
Road Horse Farm may find the shorter distance of
1,300-meters an easier sprint compared to its 1,400meter win last Oct. 4.
What is even more impressive is that Underwood
ran off-the-pace in the third leg of the Philracom
Juvenile Stakes race last Oct. 25, dealing the vaunted
Spectrum its first loss.
Stark, also trained by Dela Cruz, might not only
shadow Underwood but, given the chance, also

stark

25

M A R H O P L A T I N U M

outrace him after finishing a

similar time in a 1,300-meter race
last Sep. 3.
Another foal of Real Spicy
(out of Arriba Queen), Eusebios
Stark followed its half-brother,
Underwood, to the finish line in
their last two outings against each
other. The long home stretch of the
Naic track may prove to be a factor
in Starks favor.
Owner/trainer Esguerra
might just spring a surprise with
Dewey Boulevard (Hook and Ladder
Aboutthetown). Winning its last race in miles
ahead fashion with a blistering 1:12 for the 1,200 at
Santa Ana Park less than a week after its impressive
novato race, Dewey Boulevard could become another
star under the guidance of star jockey Fernando M.
Raquel Jr.
Two colts, sharing both trainer and sire, complete
the field of juvenile colts. Bite My Dust (Shining
Fame out of Tiwi Magic), owned by surgeon Nick
Cruz and trained by multi-awarded Ruben S. Tupas,
placed third in its last two 1,300-meter outings. Under
seasoned pilot Patty Dilema, it will likely be ridden to
a strong finish.
Lucky Toni hopes his name will work for him,
like its new jockey Andrew Boom-boom R. Villegas.
Tans colt, another Shining Fame progeny out of
Tiger Wind, might find this shorter distance

race to be more favorable to its quick but short

style of running. Hopefully Tupas will have made
the necessary adjustments in time to fashion a
sterling performance in this race. n

3YO Colt and Filly
Mile: 1,600 meters
By patricia S. dizon and comm. will j. a. de ungria

his year, fillies Gentle Strength and

Hook Shot will try to show their male
counterparts that gender is not an issue in
racing or at least not in this race.
Of the two, perhaps Gentle Strength (Ultimate
Goal- Shadow of the Moon) of Mayor Benhur C. Abalos
has the better credentials to outshine the colts in this
race. This Ruben S. Tupas-trained runner turned in
a 1:39 for the mile at Santa Ana Park when it placed
second to Court of Honour last Sep. 6.
While she was carrying only 52 kgs. at the time,
there was a prolonged head-to-head battle between her
and the eventual winner in that race; and, only a week
before, Gentle Strength won a 1,750-meter race.
This time she will be running adequately rested
and will likely submit an equal or better time for the
mile. Gentle Strength is versatile and can pace or wait
patiently before attacking the lead and it will be piloted
by an equally versatile rider in Jonathan B. Hernandez.
While Hook Shot (Hook and Ladder-Local Rules),

hook shot

to be ridden by Kelvin B. Abobo, has had impressive

performances for the distance at the racing meet
venue, it has not been as actively competing as Gentle
Strength.
But Hook Shots owner Mr. Joseph C. Dyhengco
can rightfully remain optimistic. After all, its coupled
entry Sky Hook (Hook and Ladder out of Amber
Shore), to be guided by heady Patty Dilema, won its
latest mile assignment at Sta. Ana in wire-to-wire
fashion with an impressive time of 1:39 and has locked
horns with the likes of SuperV, Princess Meili, and
Icon, showing everyone that he is a tough nut to crack.
Completing the line-up are the Tupas-trained,
Nardy Naval-owned Shintaros Speed, a progeny
of champion Ibarra out of Touch Wood who will be
brandishing an ace rider in Jeffril T. Zarate; and Super
Spicy (Real Spicy-Kayumanggi) of owner-trainerbreeder Herminio S. Esguerra, with Fernando M.
Raquel Jr. carrying the whip. n

In addition, familiarity

Admittedly, its June 2015 loss to

entertaining the idea that maybe
