1. The social purposes that the elaborate meals of wealthy Romans served was that
the more exotic the dish, the more of a statement they made. By having strange
meals such as fish livers and flamingo brains, it was their own way to show off
their wealth and what they viewed as the finer things in life.
2. The changes in Roman eating habits are symptomatic of social and cultural
changes in the late republic because it became a traditional social event, dinner
being known for the time the Romans would gather with friends and family.
Before the late republic, the wealthy and poor would eat the same types of meals.
After, however, the rich began to eat more unique and outlandish foods. With
tableware, the Romans started out by using wooden bowls, until 64 B.C.E when
glass production became popular, causing glassware to appear on almost every
Roman table.

1. The images on the tombstone and sarcophagus fit with the epitaphs because they
are basically illustrating the personal philosophy of the individual, or just that
person.
2. The epitaphs tell us that the Romans see death as a sense of freedom, a time to
escape all of their troubles and be at peace. The Romans seem to see life as
generally difficult and a place where they are trapped.

1. The horse bits probably impacted the development and improvement of metal
technology because they were used for such a big part of the Spanish culture
and warfare, since the use of horses became so popular, and introduced new
ideas for the New World.
2. The decorations on the horse pendant and bit show that the Visigothic values
prioritized the use of horses, and that they were a luxury for their culture. They
also show that the horses were high tech to the Spanish society.
3. I would expect the use of horses in war to enhance social and political
hierarchies since horses greatly affected performance in war, and introduced
many different technologies for Spain.
