Passage Master

Name: __Karla Ramirez and Alexa Huerta___________________________

Book: __America Imagine a World Without Her______________________
Chapters: _5 - 9___________________
Locate 3 passages of the story that your group should reread, discuss, and think about.
Passages should be important things for everyone to notice, remember, or think
about.
Choose a variety of passages, not all the same type--here are suggestions:

surprising/startling
confusing (something you wonder if other people understood)
descriptive writing: figurative language, strong verbs, etc. (identify literary devices) important
(maybe a clue? foreshadowing?)
controversial
event (elicits different opinions from group members)

During Your Group Meeting, Do the Following:

1.
Make sure everyone opens to the right page and help them find where the passage begins.
2. Either
read it aloud yourself, have everyone read it silently, or ask someone to read it
3. Tell your
reasons for selecting each passage; ask for comments. Do they agree with your choices?
Page __66_____ Paragraph(s) __3____ The first 3 words of the paragraph are: ___Recall that this is the
first time that America truly had a generation gap _____
This is interesting (or puzzling) because: The author talks about this generation gap as something negative.
I dont really think it is. He talks about how middle class with no unsolvable problems rebel against the
government and against war, he calls them spoiled teenager who never grew up. I have a different
perspective. I do see a generational gap and with this gap I see an evolution in the American society where
people who have no problems raise their voice in name of other who cant. Although they also did it in an
irresponsible, immature way; the author, I think is wrong, those rebellious teenagers did grew up.

An interpretation that can be made from ANOTHER

PASSAGE, FOUND on Page ___72______,

Paragraph ___1____ is that teachers, knowing how, can have a great influence in their students.

Because

They have access to the future in large and concentrated groups and in a continuous flow of generations. If
they use their influence in their students, yet more if they have access to an influential group of students,
knowingly they can produce real change in the world.

In today's reading, a CONNECTION to my personal experience and/or my knowledge appears on Page

___82______, Paragraph ___2___ and is
Middle-class dont want to be radicalized, they just want to succeed within the system. The author says that
Alinsky realized this condition and wanted to use his knowledge to turn middle-class against itself. In my
experience, Alinsky is right about his assumptions about the middle-class but I dont thinks his intention
has precisely to turn them against themselves. I think the middle class is uncomfortable with change so the
change has to be slow so they can adapt to it correctly. Changing the system is a long process and it
requires the evolution in the minds of the people, but I dont think change is auto destructive in any way.

My comment or question about this story is:

Why is people always so afraid of change?
