INTRODUCTION
Book Six of THE DRUM READER series deals with eighth note and sixteenth
pote rests. Following the pattern of Book One through Five yout will again be reading
in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 7/4 time signatures. You will also be reading in 3/8,
5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 12/8 time signs.
Someone once said IT IS THE NOTES WE LEAVE OUT THAT ARE IMPORTANT
AS OPPOSED TO THE NOTES WE PLAY , , It is harder to play RESTS than to play
notes. Keep in mind that a rest has the same value as the note it represents. By this
I mean an eighth note rest is equal to the value of one eighth note that you play. An
cighth note is equal to one half of a quarter note, An eighth note rest is equal to the
value of one eighth note that you would normally play.
Syncopated figures are developed by playing on the OFF BEAT in any given
measure. So when you play eighth notes off the beat you are creating syncopation.
A sixteenth note rest looks like an eighth note rest except it has two flags
on the rest, An eighth note rest has one flag on it and looks like the number seven
a sixteenth note rest looks like a backward letter F,
There are two sixteenths in each eighth note so each sixteenth note or
sixteenth note rest is equal to the value of one half of an eighth note,
Train yourself to make all repeat measures as you will sce when you reach
the 5/8 time signature and the following pages in this study,
Review Books One through Five before working through this Number Six
Book in the note counter and reader series, This review will help you develop into
a better reader,
orvave practice and re-read the literature in each of the DRUM REAUEK
series books.
Sincerely yours for better drumming:
