Interactive Activity: Patch Tool

URL: http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3577

Performance Objective #1: Geometry and Measurement The student is expected to:
6(F) compose two-dimensional shapes by joining two, three, or four figures to
produce a target shape in more than one way if possible;
This type of activity could be used after I have taught the students about two-dimensional shapes
and after I have shown the students how one shape could be formed by multiple shapes put
together. The students will determine which shapes can be used to form the shape that is given in
the Patch Tool.

Performance Objective #1: Geometry and Measurement The student is expected to:

9(B) describe the inverse relationship between the size of the unit and the number
of units needed to equal the length of an object;
Although the students are not focusing on length in this activity, they have to consider the size of
the shapes so that the shapes will combine to form the two-dimensional shape that is outlined.
The students can count how many shapes the whole shape can be broken down to. They are
equal in area, but the students are not necessarily measuring length in this tool.
