Follow-Up
1. Faculty Advisor Contact Information
Name:
E-mail:

2. Two-Week Practicum Expectations and Requirements
Welcome to your two-week orientation practicum! In a nutshell, the focus of
these two weeks will be on getting acquainted with your practicum school,
School Advisors and their classes. Beginning first week, you will
observe classes in both your subject area, as well as other teaching
areas. By the end of your first week and throughout your second
week, you will begin teaching some classes (approximately 20%
load one class per day).
At the end of two weeks, your School Advisors must (if all things go well)
sign the School Orientation Practicum Form to indicate you are suitable
to continue your extended practicum at this school in February. At the same
time, the teaching load for your extended practicum must be determined.
You should also have a good idea of what units you are expected to teach.
There is a possibility that you may not continue your practicum at this
school if an appropriate teaching load is not available (eg., cannot reach
80%), or if it is determined that you are not an appropriate candidate to
continue teaching at this school. Contact me immediately if you feel
that you will not be able to get an appropriate 80% teaching load at
your school.
3. School Advisor Initial Contact
On my FA Run List doc. you will find the name of your School Advisors. You
will be expected to contact them on either October 29 or 30 to
introduce yourself and let them know you will be going to their
school next Monday. You can either e-mail or give them a phone call
(either before or after school) to make your initial contact. Due to the short
notice and the ability to edit, I suggest a short email. This is a chance for

you to make a positive first impression. I also suggest you check out the
school web site to learn more about your school.

4. Required Forms and Documents MUST BE RETURNED TO ME!

You should have the following forms in your folder. You must complete and
return to me after these two weeks:
- Secondary Teacher Candidate Profile
- Teaching Plan for EDUC 421
- School Orientation Practicum Form (filled out by at least one of your school
advisors)
- Use of Student Images and Work Agreement
- Young and New Worker Orientation
You must also make a COPY for each of your School Advisors and yourself. I
suggest you also start a binder for yourself and school advisors to keep
track of all paper work, especially observation reports.
5. Other Helpful Forms and Documents
In addition to the above, you should have the following forms in your folder.
While you are not required to return these forms, you may find some of
them to be quite useful in your practicum planning.
- Dates of Practica 2015-2016 Calendar
- Overview of Teaching Assignments Form
- Suggested Teaching Load for Practicum Form
6. Scavenger Hunt
You must gather the following information and hand in to me after the twoweek practicum at your school:
- Your school calendar and bell schedule (including special days such as
tutorials)
- Teaching schedule and course outlines for each school advisor (both terms
for semester schools) with classroom numbers
- Teaching schedule of other members of your department(s), if possible
- List of all courses offered within your department, including split classes
- Textbooks that are being used in all classes in your department
- Clubs and extracurricular activities sponsored by your department
- Names of administrators, counsellors, and librarians (you should have
introduced yourself to them during these two weeks)
- Booking process for computer labs, audio visual equipment, and other

items

7. Faculty Advisor Visits

I have thirteen Teacher Candidates to supervise in four different schools
throughout Vancouver and West Vancouver. My plan will be to visit each of
you at least twice and preferably three times during this short practicum. I
will inform you in advance the dates and times of these visits.
The first visit will be an introduction to your School Advisors, to say hello
and answer any general questions they may have. The second visit will
include a formal observation of a lesson that you will be teaching. I
will hopefully pair this observation with a triad meeting, however this may
not be possible due to competing schedules. There is also a possibility that I
am not be able to observe your lesson due to scheduling constraints, in
which case I will be in touch with your School Advisors to discuss their
observations of your lessons. We will stay in touch regularly and coordinate
the times of my visits.
8. UBC Bachelor of Education Practicum Guidelines
For more information, please refer to the UBC Bachelor of Education
Practicum Guidelines, which can be found in the link below:
http://teach.educ.ubc.ca/students/policies-and-guides/bed-practicumguidelines/
You are advised to carefully read through this document to better
understand your expectations and responsibilities as a Teacher Candidate
while on practicum.
9. Follow-Up Meeting on Campus
All of you will meet back with me after the practicum as group, date to be
announced. You will return to me all required paperwork. We will also share
and debrief our practicum experiences and discuss our plans for the
upcoming Tuesday school visits.

Best of luck with your two-week orientation practicum!!!

Take Care,

Luke
