What was the Reformation?

A protest movement during the early
1500s
People with humanist views wanted
to reform the Roman Catholic Church
This created the Protestant branches of
Christianity

What was wrong with the

church?
The pope and his bishops werent honouring
their vows of poverty and chastity
They were partying like it was 1347 and the
plague was about to kill them all

They were selling indulgences

For a price, all your sins would be forgiven and
you could get into heaven

Only priests and scholars could read the bible

Everyone else had to take their word for itthey
couldnt read Latin

What does Luther Do?

Nails his 95 theses to the door of the
church
Protests the idea of indulgences
Says that faith alone is whats needed to get to
heaven, not the doing of good deeds, or
payment for sins
People should have their own relationship with
God they shouldnt have to communicate
through a priest
The bible should be available to everyone not
just written in Latin
