Weekly Highlights
In reading workshop, we continued the unit, Word
Detectives, to learn strategies on how to solve word mysteries
in our books. This week we focused on using what we know
about syllables and word endings to help us read, using a
number of different strategies together to solve tricky words,
and then moved into the topic of fluency. By the end of the
week we were practicing how to reread books to be sure we
are reading with a smooth voice both when reading
independently and with a partner.
During writing workshop, we continued working in our HowTo unit. Students are off to a wonderful start. They are writing
many how-to books to teach their readers. This week we
reviewed transitions words like first, then, next, last and
finally that we can add to writing to help tell our reader the
exact steps to follow. Then we learned three important
questions to ask ourselves before we start writing a new piece.
We think of an audience by asking who might need this book?
and Who do I hope will read this book?. After we answer
these questions we can then begin to understand the purpose
for our writing by asking What do I hope this book will teach?.
In word work, we start each day with a review of beginning
sound and blending phonemes to warm up. Over the course of
the week, we played games and worked in small groups
focusing on our short o spelling words. We learned many
short o words and reviewed consonants l and x. At the end
of the week we reviewed the definition of a noun and learned
the meaning of the words sing, do, they, find, funny, and
no. Ask us what these words mean!
During math, we continued working in chapter 3 focusing on
strategies for addition and subtraction with numbers 0-20.
First, we were reviewed the definitions of doubles, addends,
and addition number sentence before beginning to add
doubles and try the strategy of using double to help us add.
Then we practiced adding doubles, using doubles to help us
add, doubles plus 1, and doubles minus 1. Students have been
working very hard on memorizing the doubles facts and using a
variety of strategies when solving both addition and subtraction
problems. Ask us about the doubles song we learned to help
us remember our doubles facts!
This week in Social Skills, with Mrs. Youngs class, we
reviewed how to be assertive when we need help and how to
identify how others are feeling. We learned a new song this
week called the The Feelings Song, to remind us how to look
for clues on how others are feelings. In Social Studies, we
finished our Community unit by working on our
Community Scrapbooks and sharing our Community
Projects!
