Dear Students & Parents,

Grade 4 students have been given permission to bring their own educational device
(BYOED) to support them in their work throughout the rest of the year. This opportunity
to use their own laptop or tablet (not phone) in class to help research, create and publish
work is purely optional with the understanding that the student is completely responsible
for breakages, loss or theft. Naturally, all students will continue to have access to GWA
provided devices. Before any device may be brought to school, students will need to
bring in a combination lock (3 or 4 digit. No key locks) so as to be able to lock their
device away between classes. A small combination lock is needed to fit the locker hole
on the students lockers. Students, who bring in their combination lock and permission
slips this week, will be allowed to bring their devices from Sunday 3 January 2016.
Soon after, students will be given private log in details as well as attend a Digital
Responsibility talk with counselor, Kim Leiske.
BYOED may benefit your child in a number of ways:

provide students with access to current technology applications and free tools
designed for collaboration with other students and teachers
give students the ability to work on their documents both in school and at home anytime and anywhere
help students work collaboratively, engage in peer-editing of documents, and
publish for a wider audience within GWA
facilitate paperless transfer of work between students and teachers
support the transition between Elementary and Secondary school

Throughout their time at GWA, students have agreed to adhere to the ICT Essential
Agreements; to be SAFE, RESPECTFUL & RESPONSIBLE in the use of technology and
to this end, it is essential to understand the following points. For a more detailed
overview, please check the Parent/Student Handbook:

Students must keep passwords and personal information private.

Students need to understand the concepts of plagiarism and copyright guidelines
and the importance of academic honesty in citing sources.
Students must immediately report any threatening or abusive communications to
an adult.
Students are not permitted to capture, transmit or post photographic
images/videos of any person on campus without permission.
Students devices must be used during teacher directed time only and an adult
must be present.
Students should be aware that teachers have the right to monitor student devices
and online activity to avoid viruses, misuse and other issues.
Students who do not follow these guidelines can expect to lose ICT privileges.
