P&ID and SAFETY FEATURES IN REFINERY AND PETROCHEMCIAL INDUSTRY
Course name
: FUTURE TREND OF PETROCHEMICAL ENGINEERING
Course code
: CPE696
Given date
: October, 30th 2015
Submission date (Report): November, 6th 2015 (by 5.00pm)
Objectives:
To expose and familiarize students with the key piping and instrumentation diagram based on
real plant P&IDs
Instructions:
1. Intrumentation detail varies with the degree of design complexity. For example, simplified or
conceptual designs, often called process flow diagrams, provide less detail than fully
developed piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID). P&IDs are the schematics used in
the field of instrumentation and control (Automation), used by field techs, engineers and
operators to better understand the process and how the instrumentation is inter connected.
Most industries have standardized the symbols according to the ISA Standard S5.1
Instrumentation Symbol Specification.
2. For processing facilities, it is a pictorial representation of
a)
b)
c)
d)

Key piping and instrumentation diagram

Control and shutdown scheme
Safety and regulatory requirements
Basic start up and operational information

3. Based on real plant P&ID obtained from journals or books, determine the following features in
your report:
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)
f)
g)
h)

Instrumentation and designations

Mechanical equipment with names and numbers
All valves and their identifications
Piping process, sizes and identification
Symbols used
Interconnections references
Control inputs and ouputs, interlocks
Safety features of the chosen P&ID

4. You need to prepare a group report (5-10 pages) based on above instructions. Plagiarism is
highly prohibited and late submission will be penalized.
5. Finally, prepare presentation slides with your own creativity. Only group 3,4 and 5 will present
the findings.
