INTRODUCTION
A practice in which a man abducts
the woman he wishes to marry
Bride kidnapping has been practiced
throughout history around the world
and continues to occur until now

The man (groom) abduct a woman (the
bride)

Take the bride to the grooms house

The bride is kept in a room until the


grooms family manage to persuade her
to marry the groom

If the bride refuses, her family and the


grooms family will pressurize her until she
accept the marriage

Once she agrees, she will put on a white


wedding scarf/jooluk as a sign of acceptance

If the bride reject the marriage, it is


considered unacceptable for her and she will
be perceived as rejecting Kyrgyz cultural
identity

Why?
1) Part of their culture.
2) To show women as important possessions for men and their family.
3) To test the grooms love for the bride.
4) Usually are arranged beforehand to avoid awkwardness of being
kidnap twice or more.
5) As story to retell their future descendants.

)A top football player rented Bucharest's Arch of Triumph and


proposed there to his girlfriend.
)No kidnapping was involved but the scene stuck in the popular
imagination as a symbol of marriage and soon the monument
became a sort of midnight mecca for bride-napping.
