PPA time is covered by paragraphs 78.2 to 78.

4 of the School Teachers Pay

and Conditions Document 2008. The STPCD is statutory guidance from the
DCSF. All state school are required to follow it.

Paragraph 78.2 states that “PPA time must amount to not less than 10% of
the teacher’s timetabled teaching time”. This is the time the Head has
assigned to the teacher to teach pupils.

Paragraph 78.3 states that “PPA time must be provided in units of not less
than half an
hour”. This must be during teaching time.

Paragraph 78.4 states that “a teacher must not be required to carry out any
other duties, including the provision of cover……during his PPA time”.

In terms of your specific questions this means that different amounts of PPA
can be given at differing times, as long as there is a defined cycle, and PPA
is in chunks of at least ½ an hour. PPA cannot be taken away for any reason,
teachers told to cover during PPA, or use PPA for doctors appointments etc.

Timetabled teaching time is from the time class starts, until if finishes
minus lunchtime.
