Peoples recreation and leisure differs depending on region, religion, culture, etc
Rural parties incorporate work (quilting, etc)
o Informal, intimate friends
Cities: theatre, movies, restaurants, dinners, holiday parties
Middle class often host home parties
Higher classes use venue
o Seems more formal and sophisticated to have a venue
o Good way to get people that are willing to spend money on your product
Working men meet in saloons or bars
Communities held parades
The upper class gathered at more exclusive places for socializing and
recreation. Mountain and beach resorts, which were difficult to reach and
therefore expensive, attracted elite families (para. 1)
o Vacation destinations
o Makes you feel like youve left the tress of normal life
o Aspen, Hamptons, Malibu, etc
The Civil War changed how people spent their leisure
o Theatres and resorts converted to hospitals
The movement of large numbers of people by train began to blur the regional
distinctions that had previously characterized most recreational areas (3 rd para)
It was easier at leisure parks for male and females to intermix
Dance halls and resorts more popular
o Due to railroad expansion
o Now more accessible
Sporting events became sanctuaries after work
Women began to play sports
This article gives valuable insight to the history of leisure and how Americans came to
spend their off-time and expendable income; accessibility spurred the demand for
activities where genders would intermingle and make connections which relates to the
demand for holiday parties where businesses can network.

Events for charities are usually high-stakes because a lot of people depend on it
Robert Lentowski stage manages events through Get More Productions
Get More has their own warehouse that is complete with all necessary tools for a
charity event including a video wall and red carpet
Friendship Family of Dealership says they prioritize charity goals by setting aside
a portion of profits from every product sold to put towards charity
FFD gives to children and animals first- helpless or defenseless
Started a bicycle drive so that people could get to work and school
o Helping people help themselves
o Over 1,200 bikes donated
Scholfield Honda found that giving employees time off that is designated for
volunteer hours helps get their company more involved in the community
o After Katrina they let their employee off for a week to help in New Orleans
Scholfield makes charities send in requests a quarter in advance to give the
business time to plan
Charitable giving:
o Health
o Education
o Business Development
o Community Service
Giving time is more valuable than money
Use community service as team building for employees
Spread the wealth
o Giving to an organization that is unusual or often excluded
My mentor is very adamant on giving a portion of all proceeds from any event to charity,
so its important to remember that generosity in all aspects of business.

Party planners can organize a wide variety of projects from personal gatherings
like birthdays and anniversaries to corporate assemblies like my own project, the
office holiday party
They are responsible for devising a theme or concept, budget, and all of the
guests needs
The first step is to collaborate with the client to determine their vision and special
requirements
The budget is contingent upon how much the client is willing to put in of their own
money and how much money you can get from sponsors and investors
Its important to listen to the client but also mix their ideas with your own
expertise and skilled aesthetic
The planner must next pick a venue that is appropriate and within a central
location for the demographic of the audience
Take pictures, and create a floorplan for the venue space
Required to be present during event incase of emergencies or mishaps
Orders food
Designs and sends out invites
Supervise clean up after the party
No educational requirement
Most education comes from experience
Communication and team work skills are most applicable
Already having contacts and networks are vital to the industry
Need for party planners depends on economy
In a recession, large scale events will be less popular
Can get paid by hour or by event
Multi-tasking is key
The source showed me certain aspects of an event planning that are minute, but very
important to the guests.
