forms of electromagnetic
radiation.

to seating patterns on a bus
*List the conditions of Hunds
Rule, Aufbau Principle, and the
Pauli Exclusion Principle
Objective(s): SWBAT

rom the past
activity, students
will be given an
exit slip and try to
give an analogy to
explain electron
configuration. 5
minutes to make an
idea and 5 minutes
to share.

Stu

finished the flame test lab,
will as a class determine
the identity of the

be given 15 minutes to

FRIDAY (A)
N/A
For
10-15 minutes, the students
will finish answering the
discussion questions from
last time. If not finished, the
questions will be homework.
Stude
nts are not done with
electron configuration. With
each pair of students, there
is a unique set of 5 flash

IS HOMEWORK
M
OVE TO EVALUATE
Stu
dents will have noticed by
now that there are some
badges in their desk with
either e- or OS. They will
be handed an activity
sheet for the electron
configurations. Within
their rule, they will role
play as people taking their
seats at a school bus, but
with different conditions
portraying the placements
of electrons on an atom.
Eac
h group will need the
approval of the teacher to
move onto the next
condition. (30-35 mins)
Explain
Aft
er this is done, students
will come together to
answer the discussion
questions as a class,
including defining the s, p,
d, and f regions on the
periodic table, and writing
the electron configuration
of Na. (20 mins)
Elaborate
Stu
dents will need to relate
the activity to the literal
placement of electrons,
according to the three
rules posed. If there is
time, we will do a final
activity to represent an
element with d orbitals.
(10 mins)
Once
this time is over, the students
will present their diagram of
one of their elements each.
The teacher will assign
which ones as he sees fit to
scaffold the lesson. (5 mins)
Elaborate
In a
twist for one of the heavier
elements, students will learn
how to make a shortened
version of the electron
configuration. (5 mins)
They
will then have (5 mins) to
rewrite their electron
configuration in the
shortened version.
Anot
her (10 minutes) will then be
used to determine the
electron configuration of a
set of ions, both positively
and negatively charged
If
there is time, we will start to
discuss periodic trends. (10
mins)

Resources:
As
the work is finished, the
students will then take a
post lab quiz covering the
content. They will be
given 10 minutes to finish
it, and then 5 minutes will
be given afterward to go
over it. (MOVE TO
