Science Lesson Plan 1

Lesson Duration: 100min

Subject: Science
Year Level: 9
Class Size: 25
Resources and Materials: Laptops
Topic: Electron Configuration and Ionic Bonds
Learning Outcomes/Aims:

Able to identify the relationship between valence electron configuration and elements position in
periodic table.

Able to understand the formation of ions and identify the pattern in which groups forming similar
charged ions.

Able to explain how ionic bond is formed.

Activities

Time Frame

Introduction
5 min
Students are recapped on the periodic table and identifying number of electron for each
element. Students will learn the maximum number of electrons per energy level and the
definition of valence electrons. Students also need to understand the basic concept of ionic
bonds in relation to metals and non metals. The understanding of valence electron is crucial in
doing a dot diagram.

Body
Explain: Atoms like to have full valence shell but they cant make more electrons. So what do
they do?

Ionic bond: give and take e => neutral element charged. PT equal number of proton and
electron.
Why something is positively or negatively charged?
- Number of protons supersede no. of electrons
Electron Dot Diagram: Draw Lead + Oxygen, predict how it will look like

Elaborate: YouTube Video - Ionic Bonding Introduction & Ionic Bonding Part 2
How are ionic compounds formed?
1. 1 Metal and 1 Non-metal element
2. Metal donates 1 electron to non-metal and becomes positively charged
3. Non-metal receives 1 electron from metal and becomes negatively charged
4. Atoms donate or receive electors because they want to have a complete valence
shell.
5. Due to electrostatic forces, positive and negatively charged atoms are attracted

to each other to form ionic bond.

Evaluate : Being able to use dot diagram to draw polyatomic ions

Formative Assessment:
Being able to use dot diagram to draw polyatomic ions
Students will be given a polyatomic ion (e.g: hydrogen carbonate).
1. They will then be required to guess what elements might be in the polyatomic ion.
2. They will be given all the elements in the polyatomic ion, including the number of
each ion and be required to draw dot diagrams of all the elements in the polyatomic
ion. Only one drawing will be needed for each type of element.

30 min

3. They will then be required to guess what the charge would be for the polyatomic ion.
4. Lastly they will draw a dot diagram of the polyatomic ion just showing its valance
electron.

Standard Task: Need to be accurate, neat and well labelled with understandable dot point
explanation for guesses.
Challenging Task: Need to be accurate, neat and well labelled with full sentence explanation
for guesses.
Very Challenging Task: Need to be accurate, neat and well labelled with full sentence
explanation for guesses as well as finding another ion which may combine with the current ion
to for a neutral compound, including explanation to answer.
