for building and cementing.

Calcium is also present in the

process of steelmaking, where
it is used to get rid of the
impurities present in iron ore.

Physical Properties
Density: 1.55g/cm^3
Color: Metal form is shiny, decomposed --and most common--form
(calcium oxide) is a white, chalky substance
Odor: odorless
Naming: It was named calcium by its discoverer because of its
abundance in calx.
It is typically found in compounds such as fluorite (calcium fluoride),
gypsum (calcium sulfate), and limestone (calcium carbonate). Pure
calcium metal is not stable enough to occur in nature naturally.
Abundance: As it is a big part of bone building, Calcium is the most
abundant of any mineral in the human body. Additionally, limestone
and other calcium compounds are very common in the earths crust.

Discovery
Even with all its compounds being used in daily life for a
long time, calcium itself was not discovered until 1808 when
Sir Humphrey Davy used electricity to isolate the metal from
a mixture of calcium hydroxide and mercury. It took him
multiple tries, but eventually, with advice from other
scientists, he was able to extract calcium from calcium
hydroxide by running a current through it, mix it with
mercury, and then separate the calcium metal from the
mercury through distillation.
