Broadcast-Safe Video

One of the most common problems with video levels is that the whites,
or lumi- nance levels, are sometimes too bright. The FCC mandates that
no video intended for broadcast can have a luminance level over 100
IRE, which is the broadcast-safe level. (IRE is a unit of measurement in
video named for the organization that cre- ated itthe Institute of
Radio Engineers.)
If video luminance exceeds 100 IRE, the video level clips during
broadcast, which can cause audio interference or noise. Some networks
or facilities may reject proj- ects that are not deemed broadcast-safe,
and choose not to air them at all. This is why its always a good
practice to double-check luminance levels before exporting a project.

1. In

addition to manually adjusting a clips luma level in the Color

Board, you can also apply a Broadcast Safe effect from the
Effects Browser. When applied, this effect automatically adjusts
the luminance level of a clip.
