Phonetic Awareness Lesson Plan For

Students Struggling with Phonemic Segmentation

Goal: Improve phonemic awareness, particularly phonemic segmentation, by X to reflect class progress
within 3 weeks, as measured by the DIBELS assessment.
Objectives: Increase performance on phonemic awareness of targeted phonemes by X% in 1.5 weeks,
and then by another X% in the following 1.5 weeks, in order to meet class progress, as measured by the
DIBELS assessment. (Used as Pretest since this is remedial)

Materials:
Starfall.com alphabet song (beginning with A /a/ Alligator, B /b/ Ball)
Picture Cards of animals/objects familiar to the students from the Starfall.com song, or familiar
because theyve been used/discussed in class frequently.
Advanced Graphic Organizer Columns depicting the letters focused on in previous days (as
depicted by their corresponding Picture Cards), and a column for the activity for this lesson
(depicted by music notes) and todays corresponding picture cards. (phoneme range = 2 through 4
per word)
Ben10 (cartoon) World Mission motivational strategy (as students answer correctly, they move
Ben10 closer to saving the world)
Hand Puppet used by teacher for showing the various phonemes

Procedure:
1
In a small group, review up to 6 of the previous sounds the students have mastered, as shown
by the Advanced Organizer with picture cards.
2
Describe: Explain that [puppet name] is going to show us a strategy that will help us break our
words into parts or sounds.
3
Model for the students that they will copy the rhythm the puppet does with the first sound
from each word. For example, teacher holds the Ball card and makes the puppet say /b/ /b/
/b/, then the teacher says /b/ /b/ /b/. Instruct the students to try it with me, after the
puppet says one.
4
Show the students the Ben10 Cartoon World Mission for this lesson, pointing out that they will
have 3 new sounds to focus on today. Each time they get one correct, theyll move their Ben10
cartoon character closer to saving the world.
5
Guided Practice: practice the rhythm strategy with the new letters as a group, providing any
specific feedback for individual students using the Cue, Do, Review, Repeat method.
6
Individual Practice: repeat the activity with the new letters individually this time, providing
specific feedback for students using Cue, Do, Review, Repeat
7
Modeling/Guided practice/Individual Practice - Now have students repeat the activity with
the cards, this time breaking down the word into the phonemes (segmenting). [Puppet name]
will say a word, and I will say the sounds. After modeling, complete Guided practice and
Individual practice with words on todays list focusing on the 3 phonemes.
8
Motivation by reward: Now that students have used the 3 focus sounds correctly, allow them
to move the corresponding picture cards on the G.O. from today to previous column.

The post-test will be given once the 3-week instruction window is complete. Generalization will not
be addressed until that point.
