Title of Project: Design for America Honors Experience
Thematic Area(s): Creativity and Community Engagement
Expected Start Date: September 13th 2015
Expected End Date: December 6th 2015
GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op,
etc.) that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from
what is already required of other students?
Design for America (DFA) is a national network of innovative students tackling the worlds biggest design issues. For DFA
I will attend studio meetings every Sunday from 1-3pm from September 13 th to December 6th and attend additional team
meetings as needed throughout the semester. This experience is personally meaningful because through this semesters
studio I have empathized with our user (what DFA calls a client). After initial assumptions and research about Freidriechs
Ataxia, my DFA team met Caroline and spent time baking with her. We learned that her disease makes it difficult, but not
impossible, to complete basic tasks. Over this semester, the goal is to design a product to improve Carolines life. My
group specifically decided to focus on simplifying measuring and storage of basic baking ingredients because baking is
something Caroline loves but does not always have time for. The timeline is determined by the studio and team leaders
every week. They keep us on track to hopefully finish a design or make a prototype by the end of the semester. This
experience will stand out for me because I will actively reflect during the design process and meetings.

2. Experience Advisor
Identify an experience advisor and provide their contact information. Explain why you chose this person and how you
plan to utilize your advisor for this experience.
Note: Advisor(s) should have knowledge or expertise in an area related to the experience. Honors advisors, undergraduate
students, and family members cannot be experience advisors.
Caroline
User
caroline@gmail.com
Caroline is our user for this semesters studio. The entire purpose of this project is to help people with Freidriechs Ataxia,
so it would be helpful to meet with someone who suffers from this disease. Caroline would be able to meet with me oneon one about three times during this semester.

Creativity: Articulate the broader significance of a creative project and the value of its contributions.
This studio requires me to use design skills to develop ideas about how you can actually help people and change the
world. This is so much more than a creative project because all the studios in DFA aim to do more than design
something that is just pretty. The reason I joined DFA was to help people through human centered design. This
semester we have to opportunity to change Carolines life by designing something useful for her.
Creativity: Understand and optimize the use of people, technology, physical resources or community in a creative
process.
No idea is too big for DFA. Each studio consists of ten minutes to an hour of quick sketches trying to get all the ideas
you have onto paper. All ideas are welcome and seen as useful. During the first steps of the design process there is no
limit to technology or resources. Later, there must be editing because we do want to create a plausible project or goal.
DFA is also a national network with many connections. The studio leaders provide us with the tools and opportunities
we need to create successful designs. Throughout the semester there are pitch workshops, competitions, ways to raise
money, and discussions about prototyping.
Community Engagement: Identify and differentiate multiple ways to contribute towards the development or
achievement of the communitys goals.
The purpose of DFA is to improve the community through design. The entire design process can be used to achieve
the communitys goals. In this case, we are helping design something for a member of our community and this
product could also help people with other degenerative muscle diseases. Any project with DFA aims to make the
world a better place by designing innovative, useful, human-centered ideas.

List 1-2 academic resources you plan to use to enhance your understanding of the learning outcomes. Explain how each
resource connects to your learning outcome(s) and helps you execute your experience. Please include the title and
author/creator for each resource.
Note: Academic resources are professional works that can be used to assist your understanding of the topic. Some
examples are books, documentaries, videos, or research journals.
The Art of Innovation: Lessons in Creativity from IDEO Americas Leading Design Firm by Tom Kelley
This book is recommended by Stanford and from IDEO which is an award winning design and development firm. This
book will help me understand how some of the greatest innovators think during their design process. I think it will be
helpful going into a studio based completely on human centered design.

5. On-going Reflection
The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward your chosen learning outcomes.
Describe your method for reflecting throughout the experience. Indicate specific reflection questions/topics you plan to
use to guide your reflective process.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for on-going reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and
journals. Reflection topics to consider include your ideas/insights about the experience, connection to other areas of
involvement, and your progress towards the learning outcomes.
During this semester, I will take clear process photos and document all meetings with our user. I will also take notes after
each meeting and actively reflect on the design process. I will transfer our photos and work over to my Honors Portfolio
for others to read. Some things I might ask myself during the semester to initiate reflection are:
How is this project helping the community?
Am I optimizing my use of people, technology and resources?
How is this experience meaningful?

Note: While social media can be an effective platform for sharing, only posting on your personal learning portfolio or
social media account(s) does not reach a targeted audience.
Pitching your idea or starting a kick start are two ways to try to share your ideas from DFA. In addition, DFA has a large
network across the country. I will be able to use these resources to share my idea and get the word out about the idea. I can
also share my idea with other students around campus and get them involved.
