Statistics Summarizing (7, 10, 15, 8, 5)

1.

Mean
The sum of the value is 45. Since there a 5 values in the data set, 45 divided by 6 is 9.
The mean is 9.

2.

Median
Arrange the values from least to greatest: (5, 7, 8, 10, 15). The value in the middle is 8,
so the median is 8.

3.

Mode
No value appears more than any other value so there is no mode.

4.

Range
The largest value is 15. The smallest value is 5. The range is 15 5, or 10.

II.

5 Number Summary (20, 24, 25, 28, 34, 34, 36, 37, 48)
1.

Minimum
Smallest value of data set is 20.

2.

1st Quartile Q1
Find the median of the lower half of the data set. The Median of Q1 has 2 numbers.
24 and 25 so we add and then divide by 2. The Median of Q1 is 24.5

3.

Median Q2
Middle value that splits the set of data into two equal groups. The Median is 34.

4.

3rd Quartile Q3
Find the median of the upper half of the data set. The Median of Q3 has 2 numbers.
36 and 37 so we add and then divide by 2. The Median of Q3 is 36.5

5.

Maximum
Largest value of data set is 48.

III.

Stem and Leaf Plot

2.

5, 6

2, 3, 4, 4, 6, 8

1, 3, 3, 5

Histogram
Similar to a bar graph but groups numbers into ranges.

3.

Data Distribution
a. Skewed Left: The bump is on the right side. The tail is on the left.
b. Skewed Right: The bump is on the left side. The tail is on the right.
c. Symmetric: The 2 sides are mirror images; they are almost the same.
d. Spread: Range and IQR (Interquartile Range)
e. Interquartile Range (IQR): The difference between Q3 and Q1
f.

Variability: If the data will always be the same (no variability) or if it will change
from time to tome (variability)

g. Outliers:

4.

A number in a data set that is significantly lesser or greater than other

numbers. Ex. 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 3, 3, 4, 7. 7 is the outlier.

Dot Plot
Graphical display of data using dots.

5.

Box Plot
Data display of 5-Number Summary. Whiskers stretch outward from minimum to Q1
and from Q3 to maximum.

IV.

Absolute Value
The Distance from zero on a number line.

V.

Classifying Numbers
1.

Counting Numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, )

Numbers you count with all positive numbers never negative; never zero.

2.

Whole Numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, )

Counting numbers including zero; but never negative.

3.

Integers (, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, )

The set of whole numbers and their OPPOSITES

4.

Rational Numbers
Numbers that can be written in a fraction form .

VI.

Coordinate Grid
1.

X Axis
Horizontal line (left to right)

2.

Y Axis
Vertical line (up and down)

3.

4 Quadrants
Make the letter C to number the quadrants start in the top right corner and count I, II, III, IV

VII. Fractions, Decimals, & Percent

1.

Change between Fractions, Decimals, and Percent

Fraction to Decimal:
1) Write an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 10, 100, 1000,
2) Then Write the Decimal.
Ex.

3/5 = 6/10 = 0.6

Fraction to Percent:
1) Percent mean out of 100 so write an equivalent fraction with a
denominator of 100.
2) The numerator is the percent.
Ex.

3/5 = 60/100 = 60%

Percent to Fraction
1) Write percent over 100.
2) Simplify
Ex.

60% = 60/100 = 6/10 = 3/5

Decimal to Fraction
1) Say the number correctly
2) Write the number as a fraction.
3) Simplify
Ex. 0.45 = 45/100 = 9/20

Math MOY I Review

Decimal to percent
1) Move the decimal point right 2 places.
Ex. 0.03 = 3%

0.16 = 16%

0.7 = 70%

Percent to Decimal
1) Move the decimal left 2 places.
Ex. 12% = 0.12

40% = 0.40

5% = 0.05

3% = 0.03

VIII. Decimals
1.

Multiplying
Step 1: Multiply the numbers ignoring the decimals.
Step 2: Count the numbers behind the decimals in the problem for both numbers.
Step 3: Move the decimal the number of places in the answer.

2.

Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers

Step 1: Put the decimal up into the quotient.
Step 2: Divide like normal.

3.

Dividing Decimals by Decimals

Step 1: Make divisor (outside) a whole number.
Step 2: Move the decimal in the dividend the same number of spaces.
Step 3: Divide like normal. Dont forget your Decimal.
