THE CHOREOGRAPHER OF
HUBBARD STREET
Alejandro Cerrudo
Was born in Madrid, Spain
He trained at the Real Conservitorio Profesional de Danza de Madrid
Profesional career began in 1998 and it includes works with Victor Ullate Ballet,
Stuttgart Ballet and NDT2
He was named Choreograpic Fellow in 2008 after he joined Hubbard Street in 2005
and became the first Resident Choreographer in 2009
He created 13 pieces with Hubbard Street : One Thousand Pieces, Extremely Close,
Cloudless, Lickety-Split and many more.

WHY IS HE IMPORTANT?
Alejandro's choreography is "very organic."
Also, he has won many awards such as Memory Glow which is his first piece he
choreographed for the company and it won the Joyce Theatre Foundations second
Rudolf Nureyev Prize for new dance. Other awards that he owns are: the Boomerang
Fund for Artists in 2011, and a Prince Prize for Commissioning Original Work from the
Prince Charitable Trusts in 2012 for his work One Thousand Pieces. He was recently
announced the 2014 USA Donnelley Fellow by United States Artists.
He created a safe place for dangerous actions in the dance studio and he was soooo
well liked. Cerrudo's success is "the result of his ability to balance his creative vision
without necessarily restricting it."

PERSONAL STATEMENTS
Teyia: From watching multiple videos of
his choreography, I really adore the
fluidity and sharpness contrast in his
choreography. Plus with all the dancers
together as one, it really brings each
piece alive and gives it its own meaning.
Alejandro, as a choreographer, seems
really chill to work with and daring as well
to try new aspects.

Brenda: I loved that Hubbard Street is an

abstract contemporary company. Since Hubbard
Street is purposely abstract, their pieces allow the
audience members to contemplate about what
each piece might be about. Which is what I enjoy
doing while watching any dance piece. I think it's
great that they provide classes for all ages and
levels including children as young as 18 months
old. They also have separate classes for dancers
who aren't in the company or aren't technically
ready. They have workshops for schools around
their neighborhood which I believe is great
because many people don't appreciate dance as
much especially if they haven't experienced with it.
Overall, I enjoyed learning about their history and
how Hubbard Street came to be.
