TITLE OF LESSON
This week the class is focused on the theme of bats since Halloween is around the corner! The lesson will include a
creative way for the students to make there own bats through tasty treats.
CONTEXT OF LESSON
This week the class will be focusing on the theme of bats. So this particular activity fits right into the theme. The will
have read two books about bats already and have some previous knowledge before jumping into this activity. I know the
students will be able to succeed during this activity by previous observations. All of the students enjoy the theme and
snack time, so the students will be excited to do something different during this time frame. Also I know they will be
able to handle the activity because by this age they have the necessary fine motor skills to be able to break apart Oreos.

OBJECTIVES AND ASSESSMENT

Developmental Objectives
1. The students will successfully break
apart the Oreo into two separate pieces
without help.
2. The students will place the M&Ms and
candy corn in their appropriate places to
represent eyes and fangs.

Plan for Assessment

I will model the action and then walk around to see if any students are
struggling or ask for help. I will mark down the amount of students that
ask for help and the number the successfully separated the oreo
individually.
I will place dots of icing for them to place the candy and then walk
around to see if they are putting them in to correct place. I will write
down the number of students who do not place the candy in the respective
areas.

COLLECTION OF ASSESSMENT DATA

I will use a form to make tallies next to the students names that successfully broke apart the Oreo without any
assistance and then have another sections where I can tally the students who places the M&Ms and candy corn
in the correct place.

PROCEDURE

PREPARATION OF THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

This assignment will be happening during snack time, so we will begin it how they always do.
First I will hand out napkins to all of the students and tell them to unfold it and lay it on their desk.
I will then tell the students to put their hands in their laps.
Then I will hand each student two Oreos, two pieces of candy corn, and a handful of M&Ms.
INTRODUCTION AND ORGANIZATION

I will introduce the topic by referring back to the book we read together the previous day, Stellaluna by Janell
Cannon. It will be about a bat named Stellaluna. I will say, Remember yesterday when we read about
Stellaluna the bat? Well, we are going to make our own bats today!

IMPLEMENTATION

After every student has the materials, I will then ask the student to pick up on Oreo.
I will tell them that we are going to split the Oreo in half. I then hold up my Oreo and place my fingers on each
side of the cookie modeling where they need to put their fingers. I will then say, twist the cookie and pull one
side off, while I model it.
Next, I will walk around to make sure that each student understands what he or she are doing and give help when
needed.
After that, I will tell the student to place the separated Oreo onto their napkin and pick up the other Oreo. I will
hold up another Oreo and tell them to do the same thing, modeling how to do it. Then tell them to place the
separated Oreo onto their napkins.
Next the students will pick one side of the Oreo that does not have the filling on it. I will hold up the piece, so
they know what it looks like. Then I will tell them to break that piece in half. I will model it as I walk around the
class.
I will tell them to put their hands in their lap when they have broken it in half. Next I will walk around with icing
and place a strip of icing on the side that has the filling and tell the students to place the halves onto the icing to
make their wings. Once they have all put their wings on I will tell them to take the other plain-sided Oreo and
place it on top of their wings. I will model this in the front of the class.
Next, I will come around and place icing on the tops of the cookies in order for them to place their eyes and
fangs. I will ask where the eyes should go and where the teeth should go. Once everyone has icing on their
cookie, I will allow them to place the M&Ms on the cookie to represent the bats eyes.
Once everyone has placed their eyes on the cookie, I will tell the class to pick up one piece of candy corn and
hold it up. Then I will tell them to hold it by the white it, so the orange and yellow sections are pointing up. Once
I have checked to make sure everyone is holding the candy correct, I tell the class to bit off the orange and
yellow sections, leaving the white in their fingers. I will model this to show what it should look like. Then I will
tell them to do the exact same thing to the other piece of candy corn. Once everyone has made their fangs, I will
tell them to place it on the icing where teeth should go.

CLOSURE
I will as questions about the eyes and the teeth, to get the students to refer back to the book that we had read the
previous day. I will ask, Can bats see better at night or during the day? as well as Does anyone remember
what bats eat? This way it will tie the activity back to the book and the theme for the week. I will then allow the
students to carry on like any normal snack time. They will eat their bats and then raise their hand when they are
done. Once they are called on they may clean up their area and then have a seat on the carpet.
CLEAN-UP
I will then allow the students to carry on like any normal snack time. They will eat their bats and then raise their
hand when they are done and ball up their napkins. Once they are called on they may throw their napkins away
and place their cups in the bin and have a seat on the carpet. Once all of the students are seated on the carpet, I
will wipe down the tables.
DIFFERENTIATION
In order to meet the needs for all of the students, I will have cue cards with pictures of each step that will
mainly cater to the ELL student in the classroom. Although he can understand Basic English the pictures will
reiterate my verbal directions. Also before choosing the activity, I checked with the teacher to make sure no
students had any allergies, so each student could participate.
WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT?
My main concern for this lesson is the students being able to break the Oreos apart and then break one side in
half in order to make the wings, without crumbling the entire cookie. I will bring extra supplies to account for
any crumbled cookies, so each student can still make the bat.
