In todays world, biology is found in everything and is everywhere. In this essay I will be
focusing on how biology is incorporated in the profession in which I have chosen. Choosing to be a
elementary school teacher, I have found that there are many sides to being a teacher that need to be
learned. For example, dealing with certain children wont be so easy because there are many types
of disorders and restrictions that some of them will suffer from. For example: ADD, ADHD, Autism,
some will even fall under the Autism Spectrum. When children don't get the proper nutrients their
body requires they wont be as alert or able to absorb as much as they would if they were given the
proper nutrients. !

With biology knowledge in mind I will be able to understand why these children act the way
they do according to their respected disorders and how it will effect them and the others surrounding
them, also the science behind nutrients and how it helps them function correctly. I will also learn all
the different types of aids that are there to help them as well. !
!
!
Biology plays a huge role when having to understand people, especially younger people.
Every person we come in contact with on a day-to-day bases is different. Some you will get along
with and completely understand, and some you will be the total opposite of. This is because
everyone is different and the science in our body is causing that. !

For example: a child with autism or is on the autism spectrum will need more help then a
normal functioning child. Autism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized
by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and using language and
abstract concepts (dictionary.com). From a teaching perspective, working with children that have
autism aren't necessarily more difficult to work with compared to a child who doesn't have autism.
The child with autism just requires a little more time and patience. !
!
Autism statistics identify around 1 in 68 American children as on the autism spectruma ten-fold
increase in prevalence in 40 years (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Not
long ago, the answer to how autism is caused couldnt be answer, but after heavy research biologist
and scientist have come to the conclusion that there are numerous types of autism. They have found
gene changes, mutations in which are associated with autism. However, early environmental factors
and autism risk genes influence early brain development. Autism is a mental condition that has no
cure, but as these kids with autism grow older and expand their knowledge, they tend to become
more and more responsible and functional. !

When people have autism, there are usually certain chemical and foods that trigger their autism
and make them act up more or become more hyperactive and express both signs of ADHD and
autism. A lot of people with autism and ADHD try to stay away from Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
and food coloring which are found in almost every type of food. Autism has a brain malfunction
involving a chemical called glutamate, which impacts the patients speech and interaction. Autism
patients try to stay away from the MSG because they already produce a chemical that produced
glutamate, so when given more glutamate from MSG, they tend to act more out of control than normal
and it takes a while for the glutamate to balance out in their body, so they can calm down again.!

Second, children with ADD (attention deficit disorder): a range of behavioral disorders
occurring primarily in children, including such symptoms as poor concentration, hyperactivity, !
impulsivity and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder): is the same thing as ADD, but the
people effected by ADHD show a lot more hyperactivity. Children that suffer from ADD and ADHD !

both have problems with their working memory, their ability to self regulate or self motivate, the
internalization of their speech and the ability to analyze and synthesize behaviors. Because I have
taken a biology class I have been able to learn about this mental disorder and many more like it. I will
be able to have a caring and understanding for these children that I otherwise would not have had. !

!
This mental disorder has been discovered by implying biology and other sciences into the
study of children. In a way I will be examining and evaluating children every day, and my background
in biology has made it possible for me to technically examine and understand children with mental
disabilities. !

Since I have been studying the human body and how things develop, grow and chemical make
up this can be applied to my career field by understanding the development and growth of a child. !
Before teachers had biology the only method of teaching that they would be able to do, would be the
method that they were taught themselves. This could prove to be an impractical way of teaching a
classroom of diverse students, or even a single student that is not exactly like the teacher was when
she herself was a student. Since the advancement in modern technology biologist and scientists alike
have been abel to understand children at a deeper level. !

Scientist now know that no one method of teaching is better or worse than any other one
method when it comes to teaching the large diversity of children that now occupy our schools and
classrooms. In fact, there are many different ways that a student can learn and each one learns in his
own special way. Because of my understanding of biology I know it is because of the different genes
and alleles that are passed down from their parents. Each child is unique and special and needs to be
treated as such. Children differ in the teaching methods that have been discovered and implemented
in the classrooms. These children have been categorized into groups and subgroups in order to
attempt to understand the best way to help them learn in the classroom. A child could be a visual,
verbal, or physical learner. Each teaching method requires a different approach and lesson plan. Only
through biologist studying the developing child and other developing organisms were we able to
understand such teaching methods. !

In conclusion, science is found everywhere. Although it may not be the first thing we think
about in every topic, if you take the time you will realize that it is what creates all things we do and
how we choose to interact with others. Biology has helped me learn more about becoming an
elementary school teacher and what steps I will need to handle certain kids with these disorders. I
have learned and understand the chemical processes which are being taken in these children's heads
which are making them act in the ways they do and have understood the certain foods and chemicals
in products they use that will help regulate and fuel their brains to work at the appropriate level and
how I can for one help them learn in the ways they need. Because just like biology, there are many
things to study and multiple ways to study it. !
