India - Official Languages-Today(Sep 2014), there are 22 official languages in I

ndia. Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkan
i, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, San
tali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.
Till 1965, Articles 343 and 345 of the Constitution of India specified that the
official language of India to be Hindi in Devanagari script, though states of In
dia were free to adopt one or more local languages for all or any of the officia
l purposes of that state.[9] Pursuant to agitations particularly in South India
in the 60s, today all 22 languages carry official status and Government document
s can be in any of the 22 recognized official languages. This has been clarified
by court rulings as well, most recently in 2010 Gujarat High Court affirming eq
ual role to all 22 languages.

About Dogri language Dogri is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in India and Pakista
n. In India, it is chiefly spoken in states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pra
desh and northern Punjab. It is one of 22 official languages mentioned in the Ei
ghth Schedule of Constitution. It was inserted in this schedule by 92nd Constitu
tional amendment Act, 2003 along with Maithili, Santali and Bodo. Dogri speakers
are called Dogras and the Dogri-speaking region is called Duggar.
