Each student takes a topic and researches it extensively. Share your
finding with your team members so they can input your findings
into their booklet

You need to carry out EXTENSIVE research on your topic and guest.
You need to demonstrate why you have used your guest for this
topic. You need to reference where you found your research.

Berkshire rock band has won first place in a national unsigned

bands competition.
Area 52, whose members come from Wokingham and Reading and
are aged 14-16, were chosen as the Richer Sounds Unsigned
winners for August.
The monthly competition allows unsigned bands to enter tracks
and for music enthusiasts to vote for their favourite.
Area 52 not only won but their track Figure It Out is the most voted
for track in the history of the website.
As well as having their track sent to 1.5m Richer Sounds customers
the band have also won studio time and an invitation to an
industry showcase event.
Area 52 are also playing at Distortion at ReadiPop in Milford Road,
Reading on Saturday.
A young Reading band with ages ranging from just 13 to 16 have
already achieved what other bands much older bands can only
dream of.
Area 52 have recorded at the world famous Abbey Road studios.
The Beatles named their 1969 album Abbey Road after the studios,

and Pink Floyd recorded most of their late 1960s to mid-1970s

albums there.
Berkshire Gig Guide
Artists from Adele and Adam Ant to The Zombies and Zucchero
have recorded there.
Sow Rose, Max, George, Katie and Cat can be added the glittering
list of musicians.
So how did the band end up recording there?
A few months ago we won a gig at Caversham Festival through a
Battle of the Bands competition, says frontwoman Rose, 16.
Producer Mark Tufty Evans was in the audience and soon told Pete
[Doyle] from Reading Rock Academy that he wanted to work with
us.
Pete wanted to give us the best experience possible so a few
weeks ago he made the Abbey Road day happen.
Not ones to arrive without the obligatory dose of rock n roll style,
the five piece arrived at the studios as though theyd just come off
a sell-out world tour.
Originally we were going to go in a minivan, says drummer Max,
13, but Cats parents kindly arranged for us to go in a limo!
One tourist thought we were famous and asked for a picture with
us!
Guitarist George described how the band felt when they arrived.
We felt overwhelmed and were left speechless, said the 13-yearold. Following in the footsteps of so many great artists was a
dream come true.
Of course we wanted to take the obligatory Abbey Road crossing

photo before going in, but it proved difficult since the road is very
busy, with both cars and tourists.
We got some other great photos throughout the day
nonetheless!
The band started off playing the songs through a few times to
warm up, and then spent 10 hours recording each instrument one
by one.
We were blown away by the sound quality before Mark Tufty
Evans had even started mixing it, said Rose.
The band recorded a charity single for Reading Rock Academy,
with any profits split equally between the band and the academy.
What Do You Want? and the B-side Carry On is slated for release
through 12note records at the end of October.
See the band live at The Sun Inn in Reading at noon on Saturday,
October 18, as part of Oxjam Reading Takeover.
And its just been confirmed that Area 52 are supporting I Am Giant
at the Face Bar in Reading on Wednesday, November 5.

The Oakford Social Club in Reading is raising awareness for World

Mental Health Day on Saturday and putting on two of Readings

most well-known musicians.
Gig promoter Dave Maul said: Mental health is a subject matter
people dont always find easy to discuss or talk openly about.
At times life can be difficult and it can feel hard to cope on your
own.
Dave wants to spread the word about No5, Readings young
persons counselling centre, dedicated to providing free,
confidential counselling and emotional support to anyone between
the ages of 10 and 25.
Dan Le Sac is on the bill along with an acoustic performance of
former Cooper Temple Clause guitarist Dan Fisher, now in Red Kite.
Doors are 8pm and it is free entry, although a charitable donation
is encouraged
