FOUNDATION ENGINNERING-2,

MID 1 IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

1.

Explain the basic difference in bearing capacity computation in shallow and deep foundations.

2.

Explain load carrying capacity of single pile in clay and sand using static pile formulae.

3.

A concrete pile 15 m long having a cross section of 0.38 m x 0.38 m is fully embedded in a saturated clay
layer. For the clay, given:sat = 18kn/m3, =0 , and cu = 80. Determine the allowable load that the pile can
carry (FS 5 3). Use the method to estimate the skin resistance.

4.

Write in detail about dynamic pile formulae and their limitations

5.

A 40 x 40 cm reinforced concrete pile 20 m long is driven through loose sand and then into dense gravel to a
final set of 3mm/blow, using a 30 kN single-acting hammer with a stroke of 1.5 m. Determine the ultimate
driving resistance of the pile if it is fitted with a helmet, plastic dolly and 50mm packing on the top of the pile.
The weight of the helmet and dolly is 4 kN. The other details are:
a. weight of pile = 74 kN;
b. weight of hammer = 30 kN;
c. pile hammer efficiency rjh = 0.80 and
d. Coefficient of restitution Cr = 0.40.
Use the Hiley formula. The sum of the elastic compression C is C = cl +c2 +c3 = 19.6 mm.

6.

Explain in detail with a neat sketch, the method of determining the ultimate load of a in situ pile using pile
load test.

7.

Describe the settlement analysis of pile groups using equivalent footing method. How will you determine
the ultimate load and settlement of pile groups in sandy soils.

8.

A group of 9 piles with 3 piles in a row was driven into a soft clay extending from ground level to a great
depth. The diameter and the length of the piles were 30 cm and 10m respectively. The unconfined
compressive strength of the clay is 70 kPa. If the piles were placed 90 cm center to center, compute the
allowable load on the pile group on the basis of a shear failure criterion for a factor of safety of 2.5.

9.

Explain in detail about the terms related to piles

a) Negative skin friction
b) Pullout resistance
c) Estimation of down drag and methods of minimizing down drag.
